Fundraiser for Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation
Hi! My name is Siena S. and a few of my friends and I have been horrified by the recent bushfires in Australia. We would like to do something about it. We have planned a bake sale that will be available for Middle School students during lunch recess on Fridays for the next four weeks. Jan 24, Jan 31, Feb 7 and Feb 21. We are holding the bake sale to raise money to help the Australian bushfires emergency efforts, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts. All proceeds will go to WIRES: a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation charity.

Curiosity : A building block for Inquiry in the IB, and beyond! Learning Support Coordinator, Juniper Richardson
Curiosity is a key ingredient in what in the MYP calls "Inquiry". Our IB MYP units are designed around the concept of inquiry, beginning with common information on which students build and expand their knowledge, based on their own questions and research. An example of this is requiring students to come up with their own research questions, as they learn to build websites. They are not simply told how to do it - rather, after being given a variety of resources as a place to start, they are asked to find out. As you can imagine, a curious student will be more successful at this task than one who is not curious. They need to spark their curiosity in order to be successful.
If you feel you are less curious than the next student, fear not- curiosity can be developed and practiced. Students build curiosity when given the opportunity to form their own school clubs, or come up with their own ideas for service projects. In order to spark curiosity Students can start with themselves, and think, "what am I interested in? What do I want to learn more about? What do I want to do?" There are many opportunities for students to develop curiosity by choosing independent topics of study, such as for our argumentative writing unit in 6th grade language and literature, or creating their own bills to pass into law in 8th grade I&S. At our school, as in the world at large, our community members have different learning strengths, yet they are able to adapt to their units of study by using curiosity as a hook to keep them interested and engaged. This goes beyond school, informing success for individuals into adulthood.
If you are interested in learning more on this topic, please check out How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character, by Paul Tough, or take a look at the success stories of more people with dyslexia who used curiosity (and other forms of resilience) to become greatly successful, at the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity Website, at this link. If your curiosity is sparked :) and you find other noteworthy resources you'd like to share, such as books, articles, videos or podcasts about curiosity, inquiry-based learning, and/or what makes a successful learner, please send them to me at juniper.richardson@lejardinacademy.org, and I will share them in a future newsletter.
