LJA MS GeoBee
Reminders and Information from the Principal
Dear Parents,
Happy End of January - where did the month go? I hope you all were able to have meaningful conversations with your child about his/her first semester grades and goals for this half of the school year. Please note progress check forms for the current sports season as well as the upcoming school dance are due today, Thursday, January 30. Your child should have shown you this completed form and acquired your signature. As a reminder, students who received an unsatisfactory mark (a "U") in any of the categories will not be eligible for sports participation effective today or the upcoming school dance until improvement has been made to a mark of "N" (needs improvement). Student who received more than four "N" marks will be asked to complete another progress check after the next school cycle the goal again to show improvement but will be able to participate in the interim.
Please also note any missing/lost progress checks not submitted by the end of today, will result in non-participation until it is completed and turned into the MS Office. This rule applies to all Pac-5 athletes as well. For more information please see the back of the progress check form or the Middle School Student-Parent handbook.
Thank you for your continued support at home with your child's academic and extra-curricular goals. I look forward to seeing many EXCITED Valentine's Day dancers next week. As mentioned in the MS Dance information listed below, only eligible LJA middle school students and their pre-approved guests will be admitted to the event and MS campus area.
Thank you,

Another Student Independent I-term Adventure Michael H. (7th Grade)
This year I applied for an Independent I-Term to compete in the 2020 O'Pen Skiff New Zealand Nationals at Napier Sailing Club. I traveled with eight other Hawaii sailors and two coaches. My dad was one of the coaches and we were hosted by a family in Napier, New Zealand. The event had 60 participants and I competed in the Under 13 Division.
The event was four days long. The first day was a practice day with Sir Russell Coutts. Sir Russell Coutts is a world-famous sailor. I really valued this sailing clinic and I learned a lot about tactics. The second day was the first official race day and there were four races. I learned a lot about the bay and the wind conditions. On the third day, the first race was an adventure race. I was partnered up with a New Zealand kid from the South Island, and we had to sail around a challenge course with obstacles. It was really fun.
The best part was the prize which was a "chocolate fish" that we had to catch. For the remainder of the day, we had more competitive racing. Then on the fourth and final day we raced all day. The conditions were 10-15 knots and the racing was really competitive. In the end, I received 5th place and the Hawaii sailors were gifted a 2020 sign carved out of mahogany wood and a sheepskin. There are a lot of sheep in New Zealand.
After the regatta, we visited the geothermal vents in Rotorua and a Forest Refuge Area in Lake Taupo. I learned a lot about the volcanoes in New Zealand and about the Maori Culture. My favorite part was meeting new friends and the competition.
Thank you to Napier Sailing Club and our host family for the invitation and to Le Jardin for the opportunity to participate during I-Term week.
Fundraiser for Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation
Hi! My name is Siena S. and a few of my friends and I have been horrified by the recent bushfires in Australia. We would like to do something about it. We have planned a bake sale that will be available for Middle School students during lunch recess on Fridays for the next three weeks: Jan 31, Feb 7 and Feb 21. We are holding the bake sale to raise money to help the Australian bushfires emergency efforts, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts. All proceeds will go to WIRES: a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation charity.
