Principal's Message by Alex Ramsvig, HS Principal
Aloha All,
It has been an eventful week in the High School. We have had some wonderful athletics performances (way to go Varsity Girls Waterpolo!) and at the end of the week, will be sharing our mid-term grades.
As a reminder, these grades should be considered a "snapshot" moment in time, and are not reported on transcripts or report cards. Instead, they should be considered bellwethers to help identify if there are any challenges your student is facing in class.
Our preparations around the coronavirus are still a priority. Our teachers have been meeting and planning extensively, and we had our first in a series of Town Hall meetings for HS students in which we are discussing issues relevant to them.
Importantly, I have continued to stress our theme that we want faculty and students to be prepared to succeed in a different learning environment under possibly stressed conditions. My goal is for our HS community to feel supported, valued and safe. Additionally, I highlighted to both groups that even with extensive planning, in the event of a closure, we have to be prepared to adapt.
Parents and students should continue to feel free to reach out if the unsettling nature of this situation is causing any undue anxiety.
Finally, I would like to publically thank our dedicated faculty and administrative staff who have added immensely to their workload the past few weeks, ensuring we are as prepared as we can be in relation to this virus. Their professionalism and dedication are putting all of our students in the best position possible.
DP Parent Informational Event Join DP Coordinator Lindsey Schiffler, PK-12 Director of Learning Leah Magana, and DP teacher and IB Examiner Melissa Handy for a condensed version of their DP Parent Survival offering. We'll discuss the transition from MYP to DP, marking in the IB, the Extended Essay, and internal assessments. This is an informal presentation that is valuable for parents with students in grades 9-12. Tomorrow, March 13, 2020 8:00 am-10:00 am ( Event ends promptly at 10) MS/HS Library Please RSVP so we can focus the discussion.
THANK YOU!
Message from the Theatre Department by Robert St. John, HS Theatre Teacher
With the uncertainty surrounding the current COVID-19 health situation, we have decided to shift the production of LJA's Spring Play into a film. We are very fortunate to have two brilliant student filmmakers on our crew, along with a lot of very talented actors and puppeteers, and we are all trained in the art of flexible thinking. As this is my 30th year at LJA, our Spring Play consists of 29 different scripts by alumni authors. So instead of a three-hour play, we will be doing a Film Festival of 29 films, to honor creativity and commitment and all of those alumni who have come through this school in the past.
Thank you all for your support!

(ALMOST) PI DAY- TOMORROW!
Aloha LJA PARENTS:
REMINDER: Every year the high school students celebrate Pi Day (on March 14th) with pies donated by our HS Ohana! This year Pi Day (3.14) falls on a Saturday so, we have decided to celebrate (Almost) Pi Day on March 13th during lunch (12:25-1pm)
We have had many different flavored pies in the past, the students love them all! So, pick your favorite and drop it off BEFORE school tomorrow (by 8:05am) by the BLUE tables in front of the HS Building with our PFA Ladies. We would also love some amazing volunteers to help cut and hand out pie slices to the students during lunchtime (12-1pm). Please sign up HERE
Thank You LJA High School PFA Representatives
Concession Stand Announcement
Hello LJA high school community! This month, we are announcing the release of Student ID debit accounts brought to you by the high school student government! This means that parents will be able to load money under their child's name to be used at the high school concession stand. This point of sale system will be integrated with LJA's Spirit Store, which allows students the ability to use store credit, cash, or credit cards. In order to ensure parents' financial security, students will be required to show their School ID to a concession stand employee whenever making a purchase. Concession stand workers are trained with this new software. Directions with how to load money under your child's name are at the link below. For now this will only be offered for high school students. We hope that this will make lunch purchases easier for you and your student! Follow this link to order school lunch.
Registration is also open for High School Classes: Integrated Algebra/Geometry & Research, Writing and Readiness, Driver's Ed and MANY more classes!

The students were able to access the university's databases and were excited about the quality and quantity of information they were able to find. It was a great opportunity for them to get a glimpse of college level research. The students also went on a tour of the HPU campus during their visit.
