Ready, Set, Go Kindergarten - *wait list*

This course prepares students for the academic areas and inquiry-based approach they will encounter in LJA Kindergarten in the fall. Through art, cooking, and hands-on learning experiences, students will explore authors who have captured the imaginations of young children around the globe and here at home in Hawai`i. Students will also participate in experiential learning engagements both in and out of the classroom, focusing on phonics, developmentally appropriate reading and writing readiness activities, and math concepts like patterns and number sense. Through field trips, free play, and exploration, students will build the social skills needed to excel in Kindergarten while having fun on the "new" campus. Note: Le Jardin Academy’s current and entering students have priority. Non-LJA students will need to complete a reference and/or observation/interview. The Summer School office will contact you to set up an appointment.

Afternoon Kindergarten Fun
This class is open only to students registered in Ready, Set, Go to Kindergarten. Continue your child’s fun into the afternoon! Lunch and recess is from 12:00-1:00 p.m followed by fun and skill development through arts and crafts, music and movement, cooking, indoor and outdoor play, as well as weekly visits from storytellers and scientists. Live guest performances will entertain and excite students through songs, stories, and vibrant music. Come learn and laugh in Kindergarten Fun!

Extended Day Kindergarten *waitlist*

Extended Day is open to those registered in Ready, Set, Go to Kindergarten and Afternoon Kindergarten Fun, offering child care from 3:00 pm-5:45 p.m. and providing a relaxed, safe and fun-filled late afternoon under careful and nurturing supervision. Students will enjoy snack time, recreational swimming or water fun activities, computer games, movies, arts and crafts, outdoor play, organized games, and supervised homework if needed. Snacks are to be provided by the family. Students are placed in grade level classes. To ensure student safety, parents/authorized person may be asked to present photo ID at pick up.

Swim Instruction  *waitlist*

Students enjoy semi-private (2–4 students per instructor) swimming lessons in our 25-meter saltwater pool. Classes are offered at 30-minute intervals between 3:05 and 5:05 PM by highly experienced and caring instructors. The curriculum for beginners includes water adjustment along with learning body position, breath control, strokes and kicking actions for the front and back crawl strokes. Intermediate swimmers will refine their front and back crawl strokes while being introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. Stroke development will continue for intermediate and advanced students in the areas of starts, turns, treading, diving, safety and swimming efficiently for speed and endurance. You may be contacted via email for your child's swim level. Lesson times will be included in your final confirmation.

Does music make you move? This introductory class explores movement. Focus on creative movement to build body awareness, self-control, listening skills, strength, and balance coordination. The moves will be broken down into simple steps to provide a clear structure and make learning fun. Dance to songs from Kidz Bop, and age-appropriate Disney songs. Daily musical group games will be played for fun-filled energy and the confidence to get up and dance every time a beat drops. The dancers' talents will be showcased at the annual Summer School Picnic.

In this exciting robotics class, learn to build, engineer, and code LEGO robots with the LEGO Wedo 2.0 Core Sets, combining collaboration, engineering and most of all - FUN! During a series of themed weeks working in groups to produce robots to further understand the natural world, you will learn about scientific forces and recreate machines from history. Finally, compete in a number of fun STEM challenges during the last week.

Come and create written works of art! Picture books are the result of passionate writers. In this creative writing course, you will explore illustrators, authors, and poets to see creative examples of the use of the English language. Discover your passion for writing by creating 'heart' maps, expanding your ideas through discussion, and becoming an editor through collaboration with classmates. With a focus on strengthening phonetic knowledge, this course is designed to help you move from recognizing sounds in stories to confidently writing stories of your own.

Students can expect a summer full of Hawaiian culture, chant, and dance focusing on hula basics and learning the mo'olelo (story) behind the mele (song). Students will learn hula 'auana (contemporary hula), hula kahiko (traditional hula), and costume and lei making to put on a culminating ho'ike (show) displaying what they have learned for their family, friends, and the LJA community.

Love art? Love reading? Then Art from the Heart is for you! This course gives students the opportunity to discover and explore the unique art within themselves using illustrations from the award-winning Caldecott medal books as models of expression. These picture books will help students to see art from a perspective that may be new to them. They may begin to notice how lines and colors affect the mood of artwork and how shapes can be used to create a picture. Students will create their own art portfolios which will showcase their use of various art mediums to demonstrate their understanding of the art elements - line, shape, color, texture, value, and space. In this course, confidence is given an opportunity to grow with a splash of color and a stroke of a paintbrush!

Calling all adventurers to the world of cooking! Are you ready to chop, whisk, knead, pour, cut, and roll into the unknown? Join us as chefs who explore healthy snacks and delicious treats as well as kitchen safety and hygiene. You will transform into kitchen scientists by designing your own lab apron and digitally record your experiences to share with others. Be a risk-taker as we measure, mix, and concoct recipes with beakers, cylinders, and test tubes! So grab your goggles and get ready to use your senses and your mind to predict, analyze, and experiment in our kitchen laboratory!

Love mud? Love animals? In this introduction to ceramics, you will learn basic hand-building techniques such as pinch pots, slab construction, and coiling to make projects with an animal theme. Animals come in all colors, shapes, sizes, and textures, making them perfect subjects to inspire and delight. Projects will be finished using slips and glazes and can incorporate found objects and simple knotting into the pieces. We will design hanging planters, succulent pots, whistles or rattles, and animal beads. Projects in the past have included a whole beast, in all its feathered, furry or scaly glory.

Marvelous Math *waitlist*

Explore math in new and exciting ways. The hands-on inquiry will have you investigating math puzzles and projects new and old. We'll cover concepts emphasizing complex mathematics to sharpen problem-solving skills and logic, explore geometry from an abstract point of view, and improve your work with word problems. Who would have thought math could be so much fun?

This is an excellent class for both new and returning French students to immerse in French culture and language. We will spend our mornings playing games, singing songs and reading stories. Twice each week, we will learn to cook and bake authentic French dishes and desserts, such as gourmet cakes and ice cream, sweet and savory crêpes, crôque-monsieur, and more. On special days, we will find ourselves at the cinéma watching a children’s French movie. French vocabulary such as numbers, colors, animals, food and body parts is interwoven throughout the curriculum. Who knows what adventures we’ll encounter!

Be a part of the adventure! This class will expose students to a variety of energizing, engaging sports activities and games. Students will join in cooperative team-building exercises and sports-related games such as strikeout bowling, hole in one blitz, biscuit in the basket (hockey), keep it up volleyball and scoop lacrosse. Additional activities include creative movement, fitness activities, yoga, pool games, and water safety skills. Our excursions include bowling, fishing at Ho’omaluhia Park, mini putt at Bayview, Get Down Boogie, Knocker ball, and Kid’s Rock Celebration to wrap up the summer adventures. Challenges or not, this class will be sure to keep students entertained in the afternoon! There are three 40 minute rotations daily. The three sites are the pool, two gym courts, and the occasional playground area. Note: Students enrolled must be water adjusted (not afraid of being in the water).

Use your imagination and practice performing skills such as improvisation, dancing, and story-telling. Use your whole body and voice in a variety of theatrical games, like acting t out characters from children’s stories and plays. Gain confidence by working together to present short scenes and develop creative abilities. This will be a fun, supportive environment with the option to present scenes in an informal showcase at the end of the summer session.

Keiki in the Kitchen *waitlist*

Keiki become creators as they let their imaginations lead the way to cooking and creating artwork. Students will prepare yummy, healthy snacks and delicious, nutritious meals while wearing their personally designed aprons! They will explore how to use healthy ingredients to make muffins, smoothies, treats, dips, natural food dyes, and so much more! Handcrafted menus and personalized placemats will display these mouthwatering creations as they are digitally recorded to be shared with you. Your keiki chef will also learn kitchen safety and hygiene in this comprehensive experience.

Want to investigate nature? Let's get dirty and have fun! Explore the natural world around us and discover what makes our island home unique. We will immerse ourselves in nature through hiking, bug catching, animal observation, and plant identification. The hands-on exploration will be blended with games, crafts, and stories. Note: For safety, your child must wear close-toed shoes (sneakers and rain boots; no Crocs) that can get dirty.

Come and develop reading and writing skills through author study! Stories and books are often seen as a window into a different perspective, offering worlds real or imagined. Together, we will practice, develop, and strengthen our reading skills to open new doors in imagination and storytelling. There will be a strong focus on phonics, as well as reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. We will examine an author’s writing process along with noticing the tools and craft that make stories memorable. This class is intended to support students who are developing their use of phonics both in reading and writing, and will include: phonics instruction through the Read Write Inc program, creation of reading goals, an examination of fiction and non-fiction text, handwriting and phonics writing practice and daily read aloud.

Do you like to play games? Think you want to make games? Then get your game on! Learn computer programming in fun and creative ways where imagination, problem-solving, and collaboration are the key to success. The course introduces computer science basics including the language of computers and different problem-solving techniques, with a variety of “unplugged” and online activities. You will work on improving keyboarding skills and developing an understanding of important aspects of gaming such as Internet safety and digital footprints. Both coding and keyboarding tools used in this class can be accessed from anywhere at any time, so you have the ability to further develop skills independently and indefinitely. Complete the course by creating and sharing a customized, interactive story or game of your own. So...are you ready? GAME ON!

Introduction to Digital Photography *waitlist*

Discover the wonderful world of digital photography and learn to use the functions of a digital point and shoot camera, create exciting images on the iPad, and enjoy daily photography excursions around the LJA campus. You will learn a variety of different shooting styles including nature, landscapes, portraits, sports, and still-life photography. After a day in the field, have fun creating digital images on the computer using photo-editing software, and a variety of Photography iPad Apps, followed by class critiques. Throughout this process, you will build an impressive digital portfolio of images to share with family and friends. Materials needed: USB Drive and students can BYOD.

Calling all creative thinkers and aspiring artists - join Art Explorations! Express your ideas and solve visual challenges through art! Create a jungle animal or a superpower design. Explore clay, plaster and other three-dimensional materials to express your ideas and creativity! Learn new skills in drawing, printmaking, and painting to make individual and collaborative projects. You will develop your power of observation and learn to look at the world in a new way.

It’s Hip to Knit *waitlist*

This is not your granny’s knitting class, but an introduction to the creative, calming, social craft of knitting. While making anything from a ski cap to a stuffed animal, you will develop fine-motor skills, improve focus, learn math and have fun. Let’s travel through time to some of the greatest civilizations in human history! Through a variety of lessons, hands-on simulations, and recreations, students will gain an understanding of how the Egyptians lived, what they valued, and how the civilization compares to our own. Students will learn about the engineering and building marvels of Ancient Romans, investigate various epic myths and legends of Mesopotamia and India, and analyze ancient maps to gain insight on the Ancient Chinese view of the world. Take the role of Zeus, King Tutankhamen, Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China, or the Roman gladiators, and reenact Greek myths as Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom. Join a head-turning adventure to the peaks of civilizations.

Extended Day (waitlist)

The Extended Day program offers child care from 3:00 pm-5:45 p.m. providing students with a relaxed, safe and fun-filled late afternoon under careful and nurturing supervision. Students will enjoy snack time, recreational swimming or water fun activities, computer games, movies, arts and crafts, outdoor play, organized games, and supervised homework if needed. Snacks are to be provided by the family. Students are placed in grade level classes. To ensure student safety, parents/authorized person may be asked to present photo ID at pick up.

Note: Students must be enrolled in a 1:00 p.m. course to enroll in Extended Day.

Students enjoy semi-private (2–4 students per instructor) swimming lessons in our 25-meter saltwater pool. Classes are offered at 30-minute intervals between 3:05 and 5:05 PM by highly experienced and caring instructors. The curriculum for beginners includes water adjustment along with learning body position, breath control, strokes and kicking actions for the front and back crawl strokes. Intermediate swimmers will refine their front and back crawl strokes while being introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. Stroke development will continue for intermediate and advanced students in the areas of starts, turns, treading, diving, safety and swimming efficiently for speed and endurance. You may be contacted via email for your child's swim level. Lesson times will be included in your final confirmation.

Calling all Imagineers! Have you ever wanted to design your own theme park and create your own cool rides and attractions? In this class, you will collectively create an entire theme park while learning principles of design, three-dimensional immersive storytelling, map-building, and all the amazing engineering that goes into making a successful theme park. Students will develop a knowledge of spatial awareness, fantasy architecture, and the immense amount of planning, collaboration, and teamwork involved in creating a massive project. Each student will receive an "Imagineer workbook" and help draft and design the final theme park map guidebook showcase.

This course is designed for students who need to improve or strengthen reading comprehension skills and who need to practice implementing and using the writing process proficiently. Both fiction and non-fiction texts will be used to teach students how to retain the information read; and use before, during and after reading strategies. Writing skills include reviewing writing process steps used from initial brainstorming to completing the final draft. Students will use the required summer reading for incoming grades to learn these skills.

This course helps students of all skill levels learn the fundamental commands behind all programming by building their own spellbook.
