Ready, Set, Go Kindergarten - *wait list*

This course prepares students for the academic areas and inquiry-based approach they will encounter in LJA Kindergarten in the fall. Through art, cooking, and hands-on learning experiences, students will explore authors who have captured the imaginations of young children around the globe and here at home in Hawai`i. Students will also participate in experiential learning engagements both in and out of the classroom, focusing on phonics, developmentally appropriate reading and writing readiness activities, and math concepts like patterns and number sense. Through field trips, free play, and exploration, students will build the social skills needed to excel in Kindergarten while having fun on the "new" campus. Note: Le Jardin Academy’s current and entering students have priority. Non-LJA students will need to complete a reference and/or observation/interview. The Summer School office will contact you to set up an appointment.

Afternoon Kindergarten Fun
This class is open only to students registered in Ready, Set, Go to Kindergarten. Continue your child’s fun into the afternoon! Lunch and recess is from 12:00-1:00 p.m followed by fun and skill development through arts and crafts, music and movement, cooking, indoor and outdoor play, as well as weekly visits from storytellers and scientists. Live guest performances will entertain and excite students through songs, stories, and vibrant music. Come learn and laugh in Kindergarten Fun!

Extended Day is open to those registered in Ready, Set, Go to Kindergarten and Afternoon Kindergarten Fun, offering child care from 3:00 pm-5:45 p.m. and providing a relaxed, safe and fun-filled late afternoon under careful and nurturing supervision. Students will enjoy snack time, recreational swimming or water fun activities, computer games, movies, arts and crafts, outdoor play, organized games, and supervised homework if needed. Snacks are to be provided by the family. Students are placed in grade level classes. To ensure student safety, parents/authorized person may be asked to present photo ID at pick up.

Swim Instruction  *waitlist*

Students enjoy semi-private (2–4 students per instructor) swimming lessons in our 25-meter saltwater pool. Classes are offered at 30-minute intervals between 3:05 and 5:05 PM by highly experienced and caring instructors. The curriculum for beginners includes water adjustment along with learning body position, breath control, strokes and kicking actions for the front and back crawl strokes. Intermediate swimmers will refine their front and back crawl strokes while being introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. Stroke development will continue for intermediate and advanced students in the areas of starts, turns, treading, diving, safety and swimming efficiently for speed and endurance. You may be contacted via email for your child's swim level. Lesson times will be included in your final confirmation.

The moves will be broken down into simple steps to provide a clear structure and make learning fun. Dance to songs from Kidz Bop, and age-appropriate Disney songs. Daily musical group games will be played for fun-filled energy and the confidence to get up and dance every time a beat drops. The dancers' talents will be showcased at the annual Summer School Picnic.

This course gives students the opportunity to discover and explore the unique art within themselves using illustrations from the award-winning Caldecott medal books as models of expression. These picture books will help students to see art from a perspective that may be new to them. They may begin to notice how lines and colors affect the mood of artwork and how shapes can be used to create a picture. Students will create their own art portfolios which will showcase their use of various art mediums to demonstrate their understanding of the art elements - line, shape, color, texture, value, and space. Animals come in all colors, shapes, sizes, and textures, making them perfect subjects to inspire and delight. Projects will be finished using slips and glazes and can incorporate found objects and simple knotting into the pieces. We will design hanging planters, succulent pots, whistles or rattles, and animal beads. Projects in the past have included a whole beast, in all its feathered, furry or scaly glory.

Be a part of the adventure! This class will expose students to a variety of energizing, engaging sports activities and games. Students will join in cooperative team-building exercises and sports-related games such as strikeout bowling, hole in one blitz, biscuit in the basket (hockey), keep it up volleyball and scoop lacrosse. Additional activities include creative movement, fitness activities, yoga, pool games, and water safety skills. Our excursions include bowling, fishing at Ho’omaluhia Park, mini putt at Bayview, Get Down Boogie, Knocker ball, and Kid’s Rock Celebration to wrap up the summer adventures. Challenges or not, this class will be sure to keep students entertained in the afternoon! There are three 40 minute rotations daily. The three sites are the pool, two gym courts, and the occasional playground area. Note: Students enrolled must be water adjusted (not afraid of being in the water).

Stories as Mirrors, Windows, and Doors  (waitlist)

Come and develop reading and writing skills through author study! Stories and books are often seen as a window into a different perspective, offering worlds real or imagined. Together, we will practice, develop, and strengthen our reading skills to open new doors in imagination and storytelling. There will be a strong focus on phonics, as well as reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. We will examine an author’s writing process along with noticing the tools and craft that make stories memorable. This class is intended to support students who are developing their use of phonics both in reading and writing, and will include: phonics instruction through the Read Write Inc program, creation of reading goals, an examination of fiction and non-fiction text, handwriting and phonics writing practice and daily read aloud.

Learn computer programming in fun and creative ways where imagination, problem-solving, and collaboration are the key to success. The course introduces computer science basics including the language of computers and different problem-solving techniques, with a variety of “unplugged” and online activities. You will work on improving keyboarding skills and developing an understanding of important aspects of gaming such as Internet safety and digital footprints. Come and develop reading and writing skills through author study! Stories and books are often seen as a window into a different perspective, offering worlds real or imagined. Together, we will practice, develop, and strengthen our reading skills to open new doors in imagination and storytelling. There will be a strong focus on phonics, as well as reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. We will examine an author’s writing process along with noticing the tools and craft that make stories memorable. Be a part of the adventure! This class will expose students to a variety of energizing, engaging sports activities and games. Students will join in cooperative team-building exercises and sports-related games such as strikeout bowling, hole in one blitz, biscuit in the basket (hockey), keep it up volleyball and scoop lacrosse. Additional activities include creative movement, fitness activities, yoga, pool games, and water safety skills. Our excursions include bowling, fishing at Ho’omaluhia Park, mini putt at Bayview, Get Down Boogie, Knocker ball, and Kid’s Rock Celebration to wrap up the summer adventures. Challenges or not, this class will be sure to keep students entertained in the afternoon! There are three 40 minute rotations daily. The three sites are the pool, two gym courts, and the occasional playground area.

Swim Instruction *waitlist*

Students enjoy semi-private (2–4 students per instructor) swimming lessons in our 25-meter saltwater pool. Classes are offered at 30-minute intervals between 3:05 and 5:05 PM by highly experienced and caring instructors. The curriculum for beginners includes water adjustment along with learning body position, breath control, strokes and kicking actions for the front and back crawl strokes. Intermediate swimmers will refine their front and back crawl strokes while being introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. Stroke development will continue for intermediate and advanced students in the areas of starts, turns, treading, diving, safety and swimming efficiently for speed and endurance. The Extended Day program offers child care from 3:00 pm-5:45 p.m. providing students with a relaxed, safe and fun-filled late afternoon under careful and nurturing supervision. Swim Instruction *waitlist*

Students enjoy semi-private (2–4 students per instructor) swimming lessons in our 25-meter saltwater pool. Classes are offered at 30-minute intervals between 3:05 and 5:05 PM by highly experienced and caring instructors. The curriculum for beginners includes water adjustment along with learning body position, breath control, strokes and kicking actions for the front and back crawl strokes. Intermediate swimmers will refine their front and back crawl strokes while being introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. Stroke development will continue for intermediate and advanced students in the areas of starts, turns, treading, diving, safety and swimming efficiently for speed and endurance.
