8th Grade Celebration
In case you missed the email, our end of the year 8th grade celebration will be modified due to the COVID-19 safety recommendations. This event will now be a "drive-thru" campus vehicle parade so 8th graders and their families can be celebrated by staff, faculty and administration while complying with social distance guidelines. During this parade we will get the chance to say aloha to our Middle School leaders and distribute their yearbooks along with a few other treats and surprises for the 8th graders. This event will still be on Friday, May 29 but with a 5:00 pm start time and will be open for participation until 6:30 pm. For students and families not able to join us this evening, we will mail all items or make them available for pickup the following week. Please note we will have special times the days prior to this event for 8th graders to remove items from their lockers as well as returning materials like library books, instruments, etc.

Tips for Helping your Child Get Organized
Start each day with a quick check in.
Sunday prep session: Teachers post a weekly overview on Friday afternoon, so find a time during the weekend to check in and map out the week ahead so he/she can prioritize and start planning for big assignments or mandatory meetings.
At home, keep screens visible and doors open as much as possible so that a quick glance or check in can keep kids accountable for staying on track and not getting distracted.

8th Grade Digital Poetry Slam Ms. Sabrina Ito
Congratulations to all of the participants in this year's 8th Grade Digital Poetry Slam: Alohi M., Ian C., Vinny B., Miya P., Gio O., Dena B., Ronan C., Ben L., Alex L., Ravi R., Aiden B., and Walker S.. You all wrote and performed wonderful poems, and I'm proud of each of you for your creativity, your hard work, and your willingness to put yourselves out there and share your writing with a wider audience.
The winners for this contest were selected based on detailed student feedback which considered the following criteria: popular vote, poetic form, and digital 'performance.' It was a close race, but here is the 1st place poem (2nd and 3rd place poems were featured in last week's Newsletter if you didn't get a chance to read them).
The Filing Cabinet By Miya Peterson
The first cabinet is full of smiles, happiness, the best memories you have You show people to the clean, neat first cabinet and they pick the papers out one by one And they find your pink-cheeked Rosy-lipped smiles that seem just a bit too tight As if someone pulled out a key and twisted your mouth But they ignore They smile back They say they love this drawer, oh what a pretty, nice drawer it is The second is full of secrets The dreams, hopes, The metal sturdy enough to hold through trials and failures Time and time again But the third cabinet Is full of you The real you, I mean, Not the one they want The rusty cabinet with torn-up tear-stained papers And broken hinges from being Opened and closed and Opened and closed and Opened and closed and OPENED AND CLOSED As you try to get rid of the memories The thoughts The screams no one can hear The whispering voices And when they catch you opening the cabinet
You whip out a crumpled Poorly drawn smile To cover your face with And they say 'it's fake' They say We can take the cabinet away They say Stop opening it They say Show us They say But the broken hinges get stuck You can't tell them, you can't You can only shove the papers inside and wait And wait for the rust to fade but it never does There are too many papers Too many thoughts Too many voices telling you you'll never be enough For your parents, for your friends But most of all yourself As you stare at the cold yellow filing cabinet And you cry And new papers fill the holes And you cry Rusting the hinges And you cry As the cabinet opens with a rusty squeal As you scream for it to stop But it doesn't It doesn't So you take out the smile Tape it to your face You wipe the tears And you apologize And you pretend Closing the door And you pretend Leaving the room And you pretend That you're fine
