August 20, 2020 Lower School Principal Message Aloha Lower School Families,
We had a productive first week back at school doing what we do best, establishing strong relationships between teachers and students. This week, as we transition into distance learning, we shift our focus to the development of students' self-management skills, specifically independence.
Starting with our earliest learners, our teachers work closely with children to develop growth mindsets through embracing taking risks to problem solve, making mistakes, resilience, patience, and reflection. A mindset around embracing mistakes leads to independence, which in turn will lead to self-efficacy and confidence to take action.
The teachers have designed "low stakes" learning experiences this week to support students in developing independence in this first week of distance learning so they have the needed skills to keep pace as the rigor of our learning progresses. We appreciate your support in allowing your children to persist through tasks independently before jumping in to help.
As a fellow parent, I know the challenges distance learning can bring to families. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your patience and perseverance through this difficult time. It is our intention to get us back on campus as soon as it is safe to do so.
In the meantime, I've included some resources below to support you. I'll also be hosting a virtual parent coffee next Thursday morning — please drop in to learn more about the IB philosophy and to let us know how distance learning is going for you and your family. In the meantime, your thoughts and questions are always welcome, and you can reach out to me anytime.
Aloha, Leah
