Class of 2024: Alexsi M. Arwen R. Principal's Message by Alex Ramsvig, HS Principal September 10, 2020 Aloha All, As I am sure you have seen by now, we will be returning to Face to Face learning in the High School on September 21st. Students who selected distance learning at the start of the school year will continue with online instruction through our Hybrid model. If your child selected face-to-face learning and would like to opt for distance learning please complete this form before September 17th. Thank you to everyone who came out to our DP and 9&10 MYP Parent nights. We had good turnout, and some outstanding presentations from our faculty on how Distance Learning and Hybrid learning are going within each subject area. If you missed the meetings, and/or have questions, please feel free to reach out to subject area teachers or myself. As we continue to move through the semester, in addition to focusing on strengthening and rebalancing our academic programs, we are also working towards ensuring students feel supported emotionally, that they have a strong connection with the school and their friends and that we are actively teaching important social/emotional skills. In addition to our Advisory program, students will be working during their impact blocks and through clubs and our new "Impact Hui's" on all of these skills. Finally, I would like to offer a thought from my own life in relation to the general sentiment that students are simply on their screens and devices too much during the day. What I have implemented in my own life is scheduled, device free time when I physically leave my phone at home and leave to do an activity. While this sounds simplistic, it has made a small difference in my personal screen time. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. With the COVID-19 pandemic, economic uncertainty and ongoing issues of racial injustice causing major psychological impacts across the country, we may see elevated rates of suicide. Sucide is complicated and tragic, but it can be preventable. This month, counseling orgranizations across the country are dedicated to rasing awareness of suicide and advocating for the prevention of this public health crisis. We want to help shed light on this largely stigmatized and difficult topic by providing resources to inform and educate our community on how to identify warning signs, take action, and reduce the number of deaths by suicide. Check out the American Counseling Association's Suicide Prevention Month webpage for a host of resources and support services. If you or someone you know is in an emergency, call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK(8255) or call 911 immediately.
