March 25, 2021 Lower School Principal Message Aloha Parents,
Aloha Parents,
I hope you had a lovely Spring Break! I for one had a great week spending time with my kids and husband over on the Big Island and accidentally brought home an eight year old chocolate labrador. My learning for this week was to never visit a breeder if you don't want to come home with a dog.
Back on campus, learning sprung right back into action with several events, excursions, and hands-on learning activities. Check out the photos below.
Also, we have a parent coffee coming up on April 9 at 9am. We'll be focusing on student safety in the digital age. Mark it on your calendars!
Aloha, Leah

PICTURES FROM THE WEEK Grade 5 just finished their "How we Organize Ourselves" unit in which they inquired into the central idea, "governments provide structure to societies." Students learned about different types of governments over time across the world and read dystopian novels as they grappled with concepts like systems, rules, law, structure, impact, relationship, responsibility, and citizenship. Their end product to show their understanding included designing their own societies with their own governments and constitutions. This week the students shared their societies. Just hearing these fifth graders talk about why they made the choices they did when designing their societies showed the depth of their thinking. I'm hopeful that next year, we'll be able to have parents on campus to experience this event firsthand.
Grade 1 visited Paepae o He'eia this week as part of their "Where we are in Place and Time" unit in which they'll inquire into the central idea, "humans design and build shelters with the natural environment in mind." They'll be exploring shelters of all kinds over time and throughout the world in the following weeks.
A huge thank you to our LS Student Council representatives, Mrs. Omori and Ms. Postema who organized and put on a fabulous Student Fun Fest on March 12. It was a great way to send everyone off for Spring Break!
Thanks again to the PFA and all the parents for all the wonderful healthy snacks, treats, and K-cup pods that have been "just what I needed" for the faculty and staff these past few months! Faculty and staff came back from Spring Break to this thoughtful surprise - a face mask and a bottle of hand sanitizing spray.
