April 22, 2021 Lower School Principal Message Happy Earth Day!
At LJA we value environmental stewardship as a core component of our IB curriculum. Today, students school-wide engaged in immersive learning experiences on and off campus. Kindergarten headed to the farm with Keiki and Plow, Grades 1 and 2 engaged in sustainability through cooking, art, and on-campus stewardship. Grades 3 and 4 worked with LJA's Hawaiian Cultural Consultant, Ka'ai Naluai-Sempio at Kahana Iki learning about the cultural background of this historic site and continuing with their work of restoring native plants in this plot of land. Grade 5 engaged in a long distance hike up in the King's forest, adjacent to campus, led by the Wild Kids!
Here are a few of the photo highlights of the day! Be sure to ask your children about today's learning and how you can help the planet by being more Earth Friendly!
Aloha, Leah

EARTH DAY ADVENTURES
Kindergarten took their first field trip on a bus today to visit Keiki and Plow, a farm in Hawaii Kai.
Grade 1 rotated between stations today while on campus. They did recycle art, learned how to make cordage from sedge, and went to Media Center.
Students in grade 2 stayed on campus and took part in a "clean" trash sort, made fresh bruschetta, and helped to maintain the worm bin.
In the morning, grade 3 visited Kahana Iki, where they learned about and cared for native plants while weeding out invasive species.
After lunch, grade 4 continued the work that grade 3 started at Kahana Iki.
Taking advantage of the cooler morning air, grade 5 went into the Enchanted Forest to see how far they could hike.
