Aloha Parents and Student Athletes, As we wind down the Season 2 sports season, I want to take a moment to reflect on what a year it's been for Athletics. We began the school year pushing all of our sports from the first semester into the second semester, because the Fall months had high numbers of positive COVID-19 cases within our state. We were allowed to start limited off-season conditioning in October, and we were excited to return to the field as soon as we could even with restrictions. Right after Christmas break we jumped straight into Season 1 sports, making accommodations all along the way. Soccer and basketball turned into sport experiences and we got a real taste of all of the additional precautions that were needed to return to competition safely in the new world of COVID-19. Constant disinfecting, self-screening, social distancing and masking were all new challenges that invaded our practices and games and became our new normal. In March we transitioned to Season 2 sports. We found a real crunch with the amount of teams needing to use our facilities because many were out of their 'traditional' seasons. The ILH attempted to offer league Championships where they could. Some teams such as track and field were limited to 1 or 2 meets, and some sports such as water polo unfortunately couldn't get off the ground at all. But over both seasons we were able to offer some sort of normalcy to 9 sports, and got those athletes back on their teams and competing in some form. Looking ahead, I estimate many COVID-19 accommodations to carry over to next school year as well. The ILH Athletic Directors will soon turn their attention to what is possible in school year 21-22. As mentioned all year long, I appreciate everyone's flexibility and patience as we attempt to navigate new pandemic obstacles as they arise.
Jana Fraser, Athletic Director
Congratulations to our sailing team who finished in second place tp MPI this year in team results. LJA finished above Iolani, Kamehameha and Punahou! This breaks a 19 year Punahou dynasty in winning the ILH varsity sailing season.
Athletic Awards Ceremony-Save the Date The Athletics banquet will be held virtually on May 18th at 6pm. This is for all participants and their families from season 1 and 2 sports. We will also include a senior recognition for all sports, even if there wasn't a regular season during the school year.

Pac 5 Update
Please find updated PAC-5 football spring workout information in the PAC-5 Football Flyer. If you are interested in participating, please make sure you have an updated sports participation form and have taken the concussion test with our Athletic Trainer, Mr. Justin Drain.
Golf Update Our Intermediate and Varsity golf seasons have ended for all players except Liam White and Dante Sbarbaro, who qualified for the ILH Championships on May 5th at Pearl Country Club. Dante was the standout of the day finishing 9th in Division 1 within the ILH out of 50 varsity boys. He was only 2 over par on the back nine and had 2 birdies for the day. He was also only 2 shots off of third place. Way to go!! Dante is also our new Student Athletes Advisory Committee representative from LJA. He will take the place of graduating senior, Kamalu Park, who will be missed.
Congratulations to boys varsity tennis player Miles Brown, the only senior this year on the team this year.
Boys Volleyball
Good luck to our boys varsity volleyball team, playing in the first round of the ILH post season tournament this Thursday, 5/6 at St. Louis School. Riley Brunel is the only senior on the team, and he was celebrated on 5/4 in a recognition ceremony on campus after their last regular season game versus Damien Memorial School.
Athletics Survey As Season 2 sports are ending, I want to remind everyone to be watchful for the Athletics survey releasing via email. This is the best way for student-athletes to have a voice and give us feedback on the season. Information gathered in these surveys is relayed from the Athletic Director to the coach, during the post season meetings which occur at the conclusion of every season. Please keep an eye out for this anonymous survey releasing during sometime mid-May.
Bulldog Lookout We have exciting equipment additions for our Athletics program. The tennis teams just received an automated ball machine that will help increase the amount of reps they get in practice! Also our pool is shut down from 5/1-5/8 due to the installation of pool blocks. Huge shout out to Hensel Phelps for making the pool improvement construction happen, and to Wendy Cook and her Facilities Department for getting this project moving!! We appreciate you.
Participation Form New Due Date The Athletic participation form is an annual form that needs to be completed by a physician in order to practice or compete in ILH sports. The LJA Athletic Department is moving away from accepting these forms all year long, to a summer due date similar to when other school health forms are uploaded into the Magnus Health system. This is partially due to a mandate by the ILH office of a 4 day waiting period for athletes whose forms expire or are turned in late during the season. Observing this policy has been problematic in the past, and resulted in some athletes having to miss competitions. Please have your completed Sports Participation form (which can be downloaded at Sports Participation Form '21-'22) completed by the first day of school, or for fall athletes prior to the first day of practice. If you find yourself in the position where a second sports physical is needed, here are a few options with associated charges that may be less costly than going through your Primary Care Physician.
CVS Minute Clinic $69 (Longs Drugs stores) Urgent Care Hawaii $50 (660 Kailua Rd.) Windward Urgent Care/Premier Medical Group Hawaii $50 (Castle Adventist Health – Kaneohe Office building) Braun Urgent Care $85 (130 Kailua Rd., Kailua Beach Center)
Sports Trivia There are 18 total minutes of action in a baseball game.
