Junior School Virtual May Day Aloha Junior School 'Ohana,
We are filled with gratitude that we were able to host our annual May Day celebration this year, even if it was only a virtual performance. Our Junior School May Day Celebration was a huge success thanks to all our LJA families' support, donations, and hard work. We received an abundance of greenery and tropical flowers to decorate our stage and the entire courtyard, and the setting was breathtaking!
A special mahalo goes out to our volunteer-parent decorating committee - Mel Jackson, Lesley Ballew, Hillary Parkinson, Hope Woltz, Jen Hu, Jenna Masagatani, Jessica Hosoi, and Jill Harunga - for the set-up of the performance area and courtyard. We are especially grateful to our Junior School PFA representative, Johanna Katzman, for all her hard work and organization. We could not have done this without you!
I want to personally thank our music teacher, Emily Craig, and all the Junior School faculty for helping in preparations for the event and flexibility around the event itself. Special thanks go out to Sean Connors for his brilliant videography, editing, and sharing of our livestream recording, as well as to Ala Moniz for organizing the photography of the event. Below you will find links to photographs of your keiki, an updated HD quality recording of the livestream, as well as a Vimeo link for downloading.
To all our Le Jardin 'Ohana, we celebrate you and your steadfast conviction in and commitment to our journey ahead as we "E Holomua Kākou" - "move forward together."
Aloha, Josh Masagatani

Pop Up Art Show Le Jardin Academy Junior School is pleased to present an exclusive exhibition of extraordinary masterpieces by our talented Junior School keiki under the guidance of Mrs. Joy Gayton. According to our artists, the art show will feature "work based on our year long study of color, lines, shape, texture and perspective. A few of our favorite pieces are from our study of famous artists including "Starry Night" by Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock splatter painting, "Japanese Bridge" by Monet, "Sunflowers" by Van Gogh, Mondrian line animals, Kadinsky "Concentric Circles." and "Head of Man" by Paul Klee. We also created pieces based on Eric Carle books, organic shapes in nature, printmaking, relief texture, and watercolor resist techniques." This one-day exhibition opens May 21 in the courtyard. The children's art work will be on display in our courtyard for parent and family viewing during drop-off and pick-up hours.
Seesaw Portfolios All students participated in the Seesaw Learning Journal program. Students moving away from LJA are encouraged to download the journal before June 30. Returning LJA PYP students' Seesaw portfolios will roll into their next year's class and so downloading portfolios is optional for returning LJA students, but not necessary. If you would like to download a copy of your child's digital portfolio please do so prior to June 30. Click HERE for information on how to create the download. JK Moving Up Ceremony This year, amidst our many challenges, we've always strived to provide exceptional experiences. Our Junior Kindergarten Moving Up Ceremony will be no different, as this year we will be hosting a hybrid Virtual and Face-to-Face event on campus! Join us on May 28th at 12:00pm in the Junior School parking lot where each JK family will have a parking stall from which to view the ceremony. As parents enjoy the show in person from the comfort of their cars, family and friends around the world can watch the celebration - live streamed via YouTube. Similar to our recent May Day program, the link will be sent out prior to the event for you to share. Following the ceremony, students will parade through the parking lot to "Pomp and Circumstance" where parents will be encouraged to cheer, take pictures, and videos. After the processional, students will be permitted to visit with their families at their stalls for pictures and lei. Families are welcome to take home their child at this time, though not required. For students remaining at school, the day will continue as normal, including extended day. We recognize that, due to work or other obligations, some families may not be able to attend the ceremony. In those instances, we have arranged to have additional teachers on hand to support and celebrate your child. Those that cannot attend in person will have the opportunity to send in a lei which will be presented to your child by their teacher after the processional. Please check your child's Friday Folder for more information. We look forward to celebrating with you soon!

Community Workday Opportunity At LJA, maintaining special relationships with our campus grounds and surrounding 'aina is a top priority. Our PK students have recently been presented the opportunity to engage in land stewardship while caring for the Kalo plants (rescued from the bank of Helemano Stream up on the North shore) in their outdoor classrooms. Our upcoming Community Workdays present a wonderful opportunity to bring this experience home - outside of the classroom - and get the whole family involved in becoming stewards of their environment.
Join in LJA's 60th-anniversary celebration by participating in a series of Community Workdays at Kawainui Marsh on April 24, May 8, and June 5 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Projects will include native plantings, clearing of invasive plants, and creating rock paths. Click here to reserve your spot. Please RSVP separately for each workday you will attend; details will be emailed to you prior to the event.

Junior School Staff Highlight The indispensable Melanie Aurio is our Junior School rock and resident rockstar! Now in her 18th year at LJA, Ms. Aurio currently assists Mrs. Brooks in her JK class, helping mold our tiny humans into global citizens and stewards of the environment. There is nothing Ms. Aurio loves more than watching these little keiki grow throughout the year and seeing these students return - year after year - to build on the foundation that she helped develop. Another amazing part about Melanie's work is watching her own two kiddos grow and develop right here alongside her at LJA! Both her children have been students here at LJA since PK, and now are in 2nd and 8th grades. Although they live in paradise in beautiful, lush Kaneohe, Melanie's dream is to bring her family to visit Alaska to view the Northern Lights, and then while she's there, she can eat all the salmon she wants! In the meantime, Ms. Aurio finds happiness in the ono grinds here at California Pizza Kitchen and relishes her moments of relaxation and sleeping in. And who better deserves a bit of R&R than this superstar who, after full days of working in JK, still continues to help with Extended Day care in the afternoons and on holidays!? Despite her full schedule, Ms. Aurio always makes time for everyone. Whether it's assisting in classwork, braiding hair at recess, or sharing a hug, a smile, or even some turtles with the students, Ms. Aurio makes every child feel special. Ms. Aurio's kindness, expertise, and laughter help us through each and every day...Mahalo, Ms. Aurio, for all you do! Sierra Capllonch joined us in March this year with such immense skill and confidence that it seems like she's been part of the team for years. Her warm smile and friendly nature had the kiddos clinging to her immediately! When she's not tending to the keiki in Ms. Robello's JK class, she likes to hang out with her dogs and her family. Her dream vacation is to visit Yellowstone National Park to experience the wildlife and epic landscapes. Sierra resides in Kailua and her favorite restaurant is California Pizza Kitchen. Her favorite part about working at LJA is the community of kind and friendly staff and the wondrous and creative students. For the past 6 years, Karin Ito has blessed our Junior School with her sunshine smile, angelic-heart, and genuine goodness. Watching Ms. Ito so gently and serenely work her magic with our keiki, one might never realize that behind the scenes she is a whirlwind-wizard, master multi-tasker who never stops moving and helping! She is truly a cornerstone of the JK experience. Outside of school, Karin stays just as active - hitting the beach, surfing, fishing, hiking, and watching her two boys play in their sporting events (her personal favorite activity!). She loves rounding out every weekend with some serious sleeping in and Sunday family dinners. If someday she ever finds time in their busy lives to travel, Karin would love to bring her two boys on a trip to Europe! They have yet to cross the pond and would love to experience the culture, eateries, and adventures! Until then, Karin gets her culinary fill at her local fav's, Paniolo's or Fat Boys. If you ask Ms. Ito what's her favorite part about working at LJA, she'll tell you, "The JS 'Ohana, of course! Our teamwork makes the dream work!" She adds, "It's seeing the change in growth each year within each of our students. It's a pretty amazing experience to see them change from a caterpillar into a butterfly!" Thank you, Ms. Ito, for being such a beautiful person and example as you guide our keiki to grow and fly!
