Aloha Parents and Student Athletes, Melissa Handy was the recipient of the Athletic Department's Reed Olaso spirit award. Reed Olaso was the former Athletic Director who passed away in 2014. We continue to give awards in his name and his love for the students at LJA. The award is given annually to a person who, through participation and service, has demonstrated an unwavering Bulldog spirit and passion for sports. Melissa is the Technology Director at our school and her daughter also attended LJA and graduated in 2017. Ms. Handy is invaluable to the Athletic program here at the school. She works diligently behind the scenes with critical technology support, and has supported our department with everything from scoreboard assistance to post season survey creation, website implementation to Livestreaming support. She is here tonight with me behind the scenes helping make this night possible. She is the type of team member who never complains and always volunteers! For these reasons, we are proud to give the Reed Olaso Spirit award to Melissa Handy. Athletic Awards Ceremony-Save the Date Missed the Livestream of the Athletics awards night? Summer Workouts By LJA Athletic Trainer Justin Drain Summertime is almost here! Taking a hiatus from exercising over summer break will quickly lead to detraining of the muscles and cardiovascular system, a decrease in athletic performance and an increase in the chance of injury in sport. Here's some thoughts about conditioning, recovering and prepping for your next athletic season during the academic summer break.
The most important advice about summer time as an athlete is to take some time to rest and recover mentally and physically. The tail end of sports seasons in combination with final exams at the end of the school year are considerably tough on the mind and body. Take a week or two to rest, relax and let yourself recover. Eat high quality food and stretch! When you do feel ready, the summer months are a great time to condition and strengthen the body to increase performance in sport, as well as to lessen the likelihood of injury.
Body weight exercises and cardiovascular workouts are a great way to stay in shape, and even get stronger during the summer when you may not have access to a gym or equipment. I recommend bodyweight squats, push ups and crunches to all athletes. High intensity interval training and long distance running are great ways to improve your cardiovascular system as well. No gym or equipment needed!
Athletics Survey As Season 2 sports are ending, I want to remind everyone to be watchful for the Athletics survey releasing via email. This is the best way for student-athletes to have a voice and give us feedback on the season. Information gathered in these surveys is relayed from the Athletic Director to the coach, during the post season meetings which occur at the conclusion of every season. This was sent out via email last week. Please complete it ASAP.
Participation Form New Due Date The Athletic participation form is an annual form that needs to be completed by a physician in order to practice or compete in ILH sports. The LJA Athletic Department is moving away from accepting these forms all year long, to a summer due date similar to when other school health forms are uploaded into the Magnus Health system. This is partially due to a mandate by the ILH office of a 4 day waiting period for athletes whose forms expire or are turned in late during the season. Observing this policy has been problematic in the past, and resulted in some athletes having to miss competitions. Please have your completed Sports Participation form (which can be downloaded at Sports Participation Form '21-'22) completed by the first day of school, or for fall athletes prior to the first day of practice. If you find yourself in the position where a second sports physical is needed, here are a few options with associated charges that may be less costly than going through your Primary Care Physician.
CVS Minute Clinic $69 (Longs Drugs stores) Urgent Care Hawaii $50 (660 Kailua Rd.) Windward Urgent Care/Premier Medical Group Hawaii $50 (Castle Adventist Health – Kaneohe Office building) Braun Urgent Care $85 (130 Kailua Rd., Kailua Beach Center)
Sports Trivia Because they both lost so many players to WWII military service, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles combined to become the Steagles during the 1943 season.
