Principal's Message by Alex Ramsvig, HS Principal
August 26, 2021
Aloha All,
After completing my newsletter article last week noting how successful and positive it was, we experienced our first HS on-campus Covid case later that night. If you did not watch or attend the information session with Earl Kim, I would highly recommend doing so as he answered all the questions parents and students might have had about the event.
For my part, I would like to thank our outstanding school-wide administration, our faculty and staff, and most importantly our students and parents for their kind grace and support as we worked through the situation. I hesitate to make any predictions about future cases but will say I am highly confident that our team will make the best decisions possible for our students and community.
On a separate note, students will be given options to choose from for their clubs and Block B electives on Friday. I am delighted by the offerings and pleased that students will have so many opportunities.
As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Alex
HS Dean of Academics & DP Coordinator Lindsey Schiffler Aloha parents, guardians, students, and community members:
Several weeks ago in this newsletter, I mentioned the impressive academic performance from the Class of 2021. Many subject area averages surpassed that of the worldwide averages. Most importantly, our graduates will enter college knowing how to think critically, collaborate with peers, and write analytically. In addition to learning how to prioritize and manage time, DP graduates are "significantly more likely to persist and to complete college than their non-DP counterparts" (Conley, McGaughy, Davis-Molin, Farkas and Fukuda, 2014).
These skills are explicitly taught in the PYP and MYP and then re-enforced in the DP. Long-term projects like the Personal Project in grade 10 and Extended Essay in grade 11/12 require students to locate reliable evidence, organize their research, and write analytically. For more information about the Middle Years Program and Diploma Program, I encourage families to attend the MYP 9-10 Parent Night on Thursday, Sept. 9 and the DP 11-12 Parent Night on Tuesday, Sept. 14 If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at lindsey.schiffler@lejardinacademy.org.

High School Drop Off STUDENT DROP-OFF AND PICKUP
High School students should be dropped off and picked up at the designated area for the HS. In order to assist with traffic flow, please avoid stopping in the main driveway loop. Drivers should not exit their vehicle and please do not stop along the student locker areas until you have pulled all the way forward to the crosswalk just before the large mural (or until the car in front of you stops). Drivers are also asked not to drive through the gravel student parking lot during the drop-off or pick-up process. This creates a very unsafe situation for our student drivers parking and leaving their assigned stalls.
Under no circumstance should students be dropped off or picked up on the road leading down the hill. For safety reasons, students are not permitted to walk off campus, walk, or linger on Kapaa Quarry Road fronting the school.
While it is a mundane topic, student drop-off and pickup directly impacts student safety. Eli Omori is usually directing traffic in the morning and afternoon to ensure wait times are as short as possible. I am asking parents to remain patient and aware of students during these busy times.
