September 9, 2021 Lower School Principal Message Aloha Lower School Parents,
In the first few weeks of school teachers worked hard to create a strong culture of learning and safety on campus as we did last year. The students have done impressively well in showing their ability to distance, wear masks properly, and follow other precautionary measures. For this reason, and given that students who are distanced, outside, and masked are not considered first-degree "close" contacts given the intermittent nature of any contact, students within their grade level are now permitted access to the entire playground at recess. As students stretch their wings, supervisors continue to keep a watchful eye to ensure that students continue to mask and distance on the playground as we've done in the first few weeks of school.
As we voyage into September, your child will be diving deeper into their unit of inquiry. Be sure to ask your child about their learning, what surprised them today, what new skill they practiced, and examples of self-regulation strategies and mindful moments they've practiced, and the names of their caring friends. In the next few weeks you'll be seeing formative assessments sent home. These formative assessments are like "snapshots," that make up a larger picture of their unique place on the learning continuum. Formative assessments are not final assessments, but data points that help guide our teachers in both supporting and challenging your child going forward.
If you missed last week's Parent Nights or wanted to go back and relisten, we were able to record the sessions. Recordings of the events are linked below. You can scroll ahead in each video to listen to each of the grade level break out sessions. K-2: https://youtu.be/whfsrYR1HNc 3-5: https://youtu.be/b-XkrBmZcV0

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.
In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids' development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

Children naturally tend to regress a bit in their independence when in the presence of their parents as many children seek connection through a need to be helped. That said, once they are on campus, we find many students to be quite capable. This is one area where a parent-school partnership can be especially beneficial in supporting student growth. Independence transfers to confidence and self-efficacy, key indicators for academic success (Hattie, 2018).
A guide of skills children should master by each developmental stage was sent home in early September. Additionally, click here for a cheat sheet from last year's Parent Book Club book, How to Raise an Adult, regarding life skills students should be able to do based on their age range. Every child is different so this is a general guide for "most" children. Please note that not all children fit within these ranges.
