September 16, 2021 Lower School Principal Message Aloha Lower School Parents,
Earlier this week we had our first COVID case in the Lower School since school began. The student was in Early Morning Care and taken to the school nurse before class started. We are appreciative to the teachers for recognizing that the student had fallen ill and grateful for the family's swift action in taking the child immediately to be tested.
Today we held on-site testing for affected families using a cheek swab (PCR test) for the younger children. This same approach, cheek swab test (antigen) will be used with our Lower School students during our upcoming surveillance testing starting in late September. This situation reminds us to be extra vigilant in checking your child's health in the morning. Please do not send your child to school if they appear to be sick. During this time, our teachers will continue to send children with any signs of illness directly to the school nurse.
Additionally, I'd like to invite you to tomorrow's Principal's Coffee (via zoom) at 4:00pm. The focus of this coffee will be this year's Lower School Divisional Goals including Social Emotional Learning, Enhancing Learning Support and Counseling, and a new Behavior System being piloted. I hope you can make it. The session will be recorded for those of you who are unable to attend. Please pre-register prior to the meeting.
Aloha, Leah Magaña
P.S. On Tuesday, September 21, please wear your LJA Values t-shirt to celebrate International Day of Peace.

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.
In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids' development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

Children naturally tend to regress a bit in their independence when in the presence of their parents as many children seek connection through a need to be helped. That said, once they are on campus, we find many students to be quite capable. This is one area where a parent-school partnership can be especially beneficial in supporting student growth. Independence transfers to confidence and self-efficacy, key indicators for academic success (Hattie, 2018).
A guide of skills children should master by each developmental stage was sent home in early September. Additionally, click here for a cheat sheet from last year's Parent Book Club book, How to Raise an Adult, regarding life skills students should be able to do based on their age range. Every child is different so this is a general guide for "most" children. Please note that not all children fit within these ranges.
