Principal's Message by Alex Ramsvig, HS Principal
September 23, 2021
Aloha All,
Please take time this Friday afternoon to look through your child's Managebac account. Teachers will have updated grades and comments; this check-in prior to midterm on Oct. 8 provides an opportunity to troubleshoot any issues and/or concerns. Importantly, if work was submitted within the last 24-48 hours, it is possible the work is still being assessed and is not yet recorded.
I met this week with representatives from the student government to start planning upcoming events. We are all eager to continue to be innovative in our approach to what is possible this year. Of course with the constraints of COVID, we are realistic, but I am also confident we will once again have impactful and fun activities throughout the year.
This week our high school discussed in advisory and in many other classes the importance of and the approach our school has taken to "serve peace". Students have provided many interesting perspectives as we continue to help our students learn to positively impact the world.
Have a wonderful week.

HS Dean of Academics & DP Coordinator Lindsey Schiffler Aloha all!
As promised, I want to provide information on how to schedule parent-teacher conferences during the month of October. Please do not feel obligated to sign up for conferences, especially with every teacher. In fact, you might not find it necessary after checking ManageBac on September 24 for up-to-date grades, comments, and feedback from teachers.
Here is the link to schedule a 20-minute conference with a specific teacher. Teachers will have marked their availability for conferences during prep periods as well as before and after school. Once you have scheduled your time, teachers will receive an email with the requested date and time. As the conference date approaches, please follow-up with the teacher to receive their Zoom information. Please let me know if you have additional questions or concerns.
DP Parent Survival Series Join DP Coordinator Lindsey Schiffler and DP teacher/parent of a DP Alumna Melissa Handy for a condensed version of their DP Parent Survival offering. We'll discuss the transition from MYP to DP, marking in the IB, the Extended Essay, and internal assessments. This is an informal presentation that is valuable for parents with students in grades 9-12.

Mahalo!

College Visits are Back!
I am very excited to see some college visits coming back to our Le Jardin campus. It won't be even close to pre-pandemic numbers but certainly a good sign. There will also be periodic virtual college presentations specific for our students at Le Jardin Academy. At the moment, on campus college presentations will be available only for juniors and seniors. They can preview and register for college visits using their Scoir account.

Financial Aid Nights Aloha Parents of senior students, This year, families will be able to select between various webinar dates for financial aid presentations. We typically have held financial aid nights on our campus but they are doing it differently in order to reach larger numbers. Though the presentation will be geared to a larger audience, it will still be specific and informative. I have direct contact with financial aid specialists who can answer questions relating to a family's personal situation. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you Scott
LJA Wellness Message By LJA Counseling Team
Experts agree that the best way to prevent suicide is to talk about it, but people are often afraid to bring it up. Stigma plays a big role in our reluctance, but it's also scary to acknowledge that someone you love might be feeling suicidal. People are understandably afraid of saying the wrong thing, too.
In recognition of Suicide Prevention Awareness month, this week we share resources for families worried about suicide. Teenagers are notoriously prickly and teenagers struggling with depression are even more so, so ChildMind.org offers advice about how to talk to depressed teens. This includes advice about how to be a good listener, to encourage teens to feel more comfortable opening up.
There is also advice about how to ask about suicide if you are worried and signs parents should look out for.

Please help support the LJA Senior Class of 2022!
Every year parents and friends of the senior class of Le Jardin Academy plan and execute Project Graduation immediately following the commencement services. Project Graduation was started over 30 years ago to provide a safe, drug and alcohol free celebration for the kids on their special night. All expenses are paid through fundraising events organized by the class. This year's crew is off to a great start and already has their first fundraiser on the books.
Thank you for your support! Le Jardin Academy has once again partnered with Habilitat to provide fresh, beautiful Christmas trees this year. There are six different pick up spots all around the island and a wide variety of trees, wreaths and door charms. It's never too early to start thinking about Christmas and all proceeds will support the Class of '22 Project Graduation. Visit www.hawaiichristmastrees.com or scan the QR code in the flyer.
