A NOTE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL A mālama nō kēia ʻāina momona I ka hana pono o kākou --excerpt from No Kapa'a i Uka, LJA school 'oli Aloha kākou, Something that I learned growing up was that all things in Hawai'i have a genealogy--people, clearly, but also ideas, places, and the like--and genealogy is not something that one can easily shake. For example, for better or for worse, where one "comes from" and what "school" (high school) one attended means something to people. The genealogy of our place conveys that students and staff, while each wonderfully unique, are unified in caring for each other and, by extension, making their world a better place. The sentiment is captured in our school 'oli which connects us to the origin stories surrounding Kawainui, the current work of our teachers and students and the future work of those who will follow. In one of my favorite passages, the composer intones "...and this rich land is cared for/in the good works of us all." This was known about the occupants who predated us in this place, it is embraced by the current inhabitants, and it will be that by which our graduates are known in the many years ahead: caring for this place through the good works of us all. When we ask you to "embrace this place," we invite you to care for the place and its people. We invite you to build relationships with other families and with staff. We invite you to mālama the land and resources for which we have kuleana (responsibility). From this place of caring for others and our world--from this connection to LJA--we hope that you feel the desire to perpetuate the "good work of us all" through annual giving. Through your gifts, we are able: - To provide access to others who seek, but cannot afford, an LJA experience
- To enhance facilities that address the space and program needs of our school-community--from improved kitchen facilities to outdoor commons spaces and seating areas to specialized facilities for design, visual and performing arts programs
- To continue to create innovative and impactful programs
This is a vibrant and deserving place that thrives because of its community: people like you who care for others as one 'ohana. Mahalo for being a part of our 'ohana and supporting the joyful work of raising up incredible human beings who brighten our world and make it a better place! E mālama pono, Earl |
