A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY DIVISION Aloha All, This week, I want to amplify a message I shared at the PFA executive meeting regarding our upcoming IB/WASC visit. Our school has two main goals for this visit: - Obviously, we want to ensure we "pass" both reviews.
- We want genuine, outsider feedback on what we are doing well and what we can be working to improve.
The first task is (hopefully!) far more manageable. We are an outstanding school among the elite in the world, both as an independent school and an IB World school. If you look at how the IB has recently assessed us, for example, our DP pass rate and our successful MYP Personal Project moderation results rank us among the best in the world. The second task, then, is perhaps more critical. If all that we have learned a few months from now is that we retained our ability to be an accredited WASC and approved IB school, we will have learned almost nothing. We will be far wiser if through our honest and authentic sharing with the visiting team we are able to capture a moment in time for our school as we get ready to look to the future with a new Strategic Plan. While the feedback from this group of experts will provide one very valuable form of feedback, the important work is what we do with that over the coming years. We also have a busy next few weeks with athletics and school events, including our Homecoming Dance for Grades 9-12. And finally, congratulations to all of our athletes who competed in state tournaments this past week. You make us proud with your efforts and determination. Seeing our Varsity Girls complete their undefeated season was a particularly special moment! Have a great weekend, Alex |

Aloha Class of 2024 and 2025 Parents, I wanted to pass along some important information regarding an AMAZING pre-college program for Native Hawaiian, American Indian, or Alaska Native high school students. I had an opportunity to work on the staff for College Horizons, plus we have had a handful of former LJA students attend and feedback is all positive. These are the types of programs that make a difference. I have included a link to College Horizons and to the application below. Over the course of 6 days, students will: - Craft a list of 10 suitable colleges to apply to
- Complete a winning Common Application
- Write memorable essays and create a resume
- Receive ACT/SAT test taking strategies and resources
- Navigate the financial aid and scholarship process
- Attend a college fair with 50+ of our college partners
I would be happy to answer any questions. KSC is a leadership and conservation program designed by the LJA Office of Experiential Education, intended to recognize students who have displayed a sustained commitment to the protection and restoration of Kawainui Marsh, where a number of our ongoing experiential education projects are focused. Many LJA students have been participating in these projects for multiple years and have developed a remarkable stewardship ethic and deep breadth of knowledge related to the natural and cultural history of Kawainui, and KSC will empower these students to act as leaders and mentors amongst their peers in the marsh. As part of KSC, students will have the opportunity to work directly alongside community experts and conservation professionals to design action projects that will contribute to the future conservation and management of Kawainui. This initial cohort will comprise 14 LJA students along with 3 students from Kalaheo High School. Please contact Avery Filer if you have any questions regarding the Kawainui Stewardship Certification or our other Impact Projects, or if you would like to be involved in our efforts! BLOOD DRIVE UPDATE Wednesday, we completed THE most successful LJA blood drive to date! The Blood Bank of Hawaii asked us to try to collect 40 units of blood and we gave them 50! There are too many people to thank as this was truly an LJA community event. If you see our Student Blood Drive Leaders - Arwen, Hanalei, Aleah, Massimo, and Gio- please give them praise and appreciation! They recruited 32 first-time donors and over 50% of the donations were from students. These leaders will be back in action in March for the spring blood drive. |
Check out the project grad page to see what they have for sale to support them. |
