Principal's Message

by Alex Ramsvig, HS Dean of Academics

We have had another successful week up in the High School: PSAT testing, Parent's Turn to Learn, 8th Grade parent HS introduction and some outstanding athletics performances.

Some of you might have attended my Parents' Turn to Learn session on DP instruction and assessment. For those of you who did not, I thought I would highlight one peer reviewed study I discussed which found that:

  • DP students are better able than their peers to cope with demanding workloads, manage their time and meet the expectations placed on them
  • Separating out all other factors DP students perform better in college and complete college more often than non-DP students

Certainly our programs are rigorous, but we also have good data which supports the effectiveness of our programs.

Finally, while there is only a few days left in our month focused on Parent and Teacher meetings, please know that you can always ask to see any of our teachers if you have questions or concerns.

Have a great weekend!

As the Fleur Turns

The coconut wireless reports that HS students have been drafted into working as gardeners for the school!

SORT OF TRUE! Our 9th and 12th grade students worked with Ms. Hoe and their advisors to reinvigorate the Lower School garden as a CAS and SA project. Based on how muddy everyone was, it looks like a great success!

Guest Speaker in DP2 Biology

Dr. Donald Helman, a specialist in pulmonary medicine at Kaiser Permanente, gave seniors in biology an eye-opening lecture on pulmonary diseases, especially lung cancer. He also weighed in on vaping/e-cigarettes. Although the trend is still so new that there isn't any scientific evidence of long-term negative health risks yet, YET is the operative word here, the same was true for tobacco smokers before 1965. The dangers were unknown but still there. E-cigs ingredients are unregulated and contain lots of chemicals.
