Principal's Message

by Alex Ramsvig, HS Dean of Academics

This week is our last full academic week for a while - with Veterans Day and a Professional Development Day next week followed by Thanksgiving Break the week after. These non school days are perfect to catch up on work as well as catching up on work/life balance with extracurricular activities.

As I did back in September, I thought I would use this space to thank some people who deserve a shout out:

  1. Christina Hoe, Leah Magana and Krista Quint who have been working incredibly hard with our whole faculty to plan the upcoming I-Term, coordinating everything from vaccinations for our international trips, life guards for swimming and of course the great course content for each experience.
  2. Scott Liedtke who is just finishing the college visit season (well over 100 colleges came to LJA!) as well as writing a lengthy, personal recommendation for every single senior - and - Lizbeth Smith who creates and then works to send out hundreds of HS transcripts to colleges all around the world.
  3. Senior Riley Diersbock and her family who built and delivered our new tetherball poles. If you have driven by the HS at all the past few weeks you will have seen students playing throughout the day. That physical activity is great to get the mind relaxed and ready to learn!
  4. All of our language teachers (both English and Second Language) who are challenging our students every day to learn both how to speak and write but also about the cultures from which these languages spring.
  5. Our LJA Parents who come out regularly for our sporting events, after school learning events and just to meet with teachers to learn more about our school (not to mention choosing LJA for their children!)

I could of course go on and on with more people to thank but this is a good start for this week!

Have a great weekend!

As the Fleur Turns

The coconut wireless reports that the entire HS faculty was away on Thursday at a conference!

NOT TRUE! Many LJA teachers were at the "Schools of the Future" conference learning form some of the best educators in the world but not the whole faculty! Everyone else will be filled in through presentations later in the semester.

We hope to see you there!

Thomas Caps '22 Ranked No.1 in Nation

Thomas Caps '22 just became the third student at Le Jardin Academy to qualify for USA Swimming Junior Nationals, and that's more than any other school in Hawaii! Thomas, along with Alana Barthel and Luke Faurot will head to Austin, Texas in early December to represent the  Aulea Swim Club at the competition. At last week's Bill Smith Invitational, Thomas qualified in the 200 breast, setting a new Hawaii record in the 13-14 age group, and now ranks No. 1 in the nation in his age group for this event.  He also broke a 13-14 record in the 100 breast, breaking a 42-year-old record.

As for what's next for Thomas? He says "I want to get into a college with a good swim team because, from what I can tell, the friendships made with teammates and the facilities at college allow you to reach new heights." But until then he says, "I'll keep a low profile and focus on the process, instead of getting caught up in my future as an athlete so as to not set any expectations. Maybe I will make the team. Maybe I won't. Giving up, however, is never an option."

MYP Minute

by Krista Quint, MS Dean of Academics

MYP5 PE students were showcasing their summative projects at the Human Body Fair today and I was impressed by their ability to articulate the complexity of these systems, as well as the creativity they showed in their 3D projects.

The project: Students inquired into a human body system of their choice and researched into how it works. They then created an interactive or 3D version of the system, and presented their learning to their classmates. Students used the rubric to give each other feedback (peer assessment) as they walked around to learn about the different body systems.

This is an awesome example of inquiry in action: an assessment that gives students choice and voice over how they share their understanding of the content. They also learned from each other in the process. Great work students!

Enjoy the long weekend and stay healthy!
