8th grade science students joined the kindergarten class for a science exploration last week. The 8th grade students helped the kindergarten class make their own bouncy balls and then performed experiments with them as a part of the PYP unit on play.

 

Reminders and Updates from the Principal

 

ManageBac has completed the uploading of your child's Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®) test results. If you recall, these tests were taken earlier this semester to help determine your child's instructional level and measure academic growth throughout the school year. To find the results, please go to the REPORTS section of your child's MB account and the report should be the first PDF document listed. For a quick reference guide on how to read the report please click here.

 

When reviewing the results keep in mind the following points:

 

MAP tests are unique in that they are adaptive tests your child took on a computer. This means that the test became more difficult the more questions your child answered correctly. When your child incorrectly answered a question, the test became easier. Therefore, your child took a test specifically created for his or her learning level.


Please also note the tests your child took was the Reading and Math 6+ Common Core tests which is different from the one he/she took in Lower School as well as the same we administer to students in grades 6-10.


In addition please note your child's MAP results are reported in RIT scores. This is a different type of score than a typical test that provides a percentage correct. It is also different from many tests that provide results based on your child's score compared to others in his or her grade.  Instead, the RIT score is an equal-interval scale, like feet and inches, that is independent of grade level. As a result, we can easily measure growth in learning. This type of score increases the value of the tests as a tool to improve student learning because it enables teachers to recognize where to focus attention for your child's learning.

MYP MINUTE

 

Aloha LJA Families,

 

This week I'd like to highlight the exciting interdisciplinary learning that's happening in the 7th grade across drama and visual arts. Students' ultimate goal is to create a puppet show aimed at a lower school audience around the themes of our school's 4 School-Wide Agreements. They start by developing characters, storylines, and stage directions in drama class. They then design and sew a puppet that impersonates that character in visual arts class. The students will perform their puppetry masterpieces for lower school students later this month. How cool is that?!!

Weekly Dose of Book

Our book this week is Flush by Carl Hiaasen. We recommend these books to you because one day when I was in English class I saw this book on the shelf and just wanted to try it. It turns out that I really liked it so I think you will too! This is a book about a kid that tries to protect the ocean by stopping pollution in Florida. This is a great book that I definitely think you should read. You will get hooked on this book.

Chorus and Band Students Will Be Performing In Our Annual Winter Concert.
Please Save The Date!

HS/MS Winter Concert

December 12th

 

On Wednesday, December 12 at 6:00 p.m., the High School and Middle School Band and Chorus students will be presenting a Winter Concert in the LJA Gym. This concert is a culmination of all of the music that the students have been learning in their classes and ensembles, and it promises to be a wonderful showcase of student talent. The following students will be performing:


SEA Chorus
SEA Band
MYP 2 & 3 Chorus
MYP 2 & 3 Band
MYP 1 Chorus - 1st & 2nd Quarter

 

For all students participating in the performance the required attire for this evening is as follows:

 

Boys: White long sleeved dress shirt with black slacks, black socks, and black dress shoes.

Girls: Knee length black dress or white blouse or shirt, with black skirt or slacks, and black dress shoes.


A rehearsal schedule for the day of will be released as soon as the details are finalized. Your child is an important
part of this program so please reserve this evening.

 

Project Grad parents will be putting together a list of food options that can be purchased prior to the event for those
students who will remain at school on the day of the concert. Parents are also welcome to order food if you would like to eat with your child before the performance.

Come join the fun in this fast-paced exciting class where students develop singing, acting, and dancing techniques, as well as, their on-stage performance skills.  The experience culminates in a fully staged '80's inspired production of 'Cinderella' titled, "DUST-BUSTERS!"

In the Spring of 2019. Songs include: Take on Me, Ghost Busters, Footloose, 9-5, Purple Rain, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Uptown Girl, Another One Bites the Dust, and more!!

TOYS FOR TOTS

 

Help brighten the holiday season for a child in need by donating a new and unwrapped toy at any of our drop-off areas: Main Office, High School, and Junior school. Collection dates are Nov. 7 - Dec. 6.

 

Together we can make a difference and also teach our children the value of compassion, empathy, and the gift of giving back. 

 

All donations stay on Oahu.
