MS/HS Mandarin Classes Celebrate Chinese New Year

Did you know that Chinese New Year lasts for 15 days and is also known as Spring Festival? To celebrate the season and to usher in the year of the Boar, the HS & MS Mandarin classes collaborated on a dumpling (Jiaozi) making activity. They learned about the history and significance of Chinese dumplings, that many different cultures across the globe eat dumplings too and also learned how to make them from scratch.

The HS classes went on to have a Jiaozi making showdown while some of the MS students went home to make Jiaozi with their families to showcase their skills!

Peer Tutoring News!

The Peer Tutoring program will now take place during SEA block time, in room 311, from 2:30-3:20!

In an effort to maximize the effectiveness of the peer tutoring program, we have moved our meeting time from after school to during school. The after school time-frame was less than ideal as many students had conflicts due to sports and other commitments, so building the program into our school day as an extended help option is a solution that we hope best addresses this.

Students who were part of the program after school will be offered a chance to get help from peers who we have identified as positive academic role models, and new students who were part of the extended study halls on SEA block days will also have the opportunity to join Peer Tutoring. There will be faculty supervision of the peer groups, and we will continue to update and communicate with the students involved.

If you are interested in having your child still work after-school with a High School peer tutor, please contact Ms. Krog so she can help connect you to an available tutor. If you have any questions about this change or about the Peer Tutoring Program in general, please contact Ms. Krog (ext 3150) or the MS Office.

Service As Action Check-in

Students have asked recently how to "complete" Service as Action Activities. Here is the answer:

After you fill out the planning form and do the service activity, you must check back in on managebac to write a short reflection. Click on the Title of the activity that you created, and then click on "Add Reflections and Evidence". This will bring you to a text box with a prompt question about what you learned during the service activity based on your chosen learning outcome. If you chose "collaboration", for example, your reflection should explain how the activity included an element of collaboration, how that went (were there any difficulties, and if so why, how? What went well?) and what you observed, felt, and thought about while engaged in this activity. After writing this reflection, click SAVE. You are encouraged to upload photos or other interesting clips from flyers or webpages that might help you share the activity also. The LAST STEP is to "request supervisor review" which is another button on the SA screen, which will only be visible once you have entered a supervisor email.

There will be more information available on this process in next week's weekly, after our team of fearless SA student leaders creates a screencast tutorial of the final steps. Stay tuned!

Family Promise Hawai'i

For her Service as Action project, sixth grader Hannah C. is conducting a gift card and diaper drive for Family Promise Hawai'i. The mission of Family Promise of Hawai'i is to help families with children experiencing homelessness and help them transition to sustainable independence.

Gift Cards - Donations of gift cards to stores and restaurants like Walmart, Longs, Zippy's, Safeway, Ross, and gas stations, etc. will help the families enrolled in Family Promise Hawaii's shelter and diversion program to go shopping, get something to eat, or grab a meal. Gift cards of any amounts will be accepted but Family Promise suggests $30 as an amount that can really make a difference!

Diapers and Wipes - Help keep the babies and toddlers in Family Promise Hawaii's programs clean, dry and healthy. While all sizes of diapers are needed, sizes 4, 5, and 6 are in the highest demand. Baby wipes are also appreciated.

Please drop off your gift cards, diapers or wipes at LJA's front office. A secure box for the gift cards and a box for diaper and wipes donations is available. Donations will be accepted from Monday, February 25th through Friday, March 18th.
