LJA Impact Term is underway! Principal's Message by Alex Ramsvig, HS Principal
Aloha All,
Our 2nd Annual Impact Term Session is in full swing, and so far has been a big success once again. Of course, we still have trips continuing into next week, and so I will wait on a full update until then. For more information on I-Term and its 2020 courses, click HERE.
One important reminder- is that this Monday, January 13th, is a Professional Development Day for our High School Faculty, and so there will be NO classes for students that day. (All other school divisions are as normal).
Have a great weekend!
Information on the "Choking Challenge" by Vicki McNeill, MS/HS Dean of Students
Aloha Parents,
We recently were made aware of the possibility that some of our students may be engaging in behavior that could result in serious health issues. This involves a "challenge" often posted on social media involving the practice of choking oneself or others to obtain a brief lightheadedness or euphoric high. This goes by various names which include the choking challenge, rising sun, space monkey, flatliner, gasp, American Dream, tingling, blackout, passout, funky chicken, and roulette. Engaging in this behavior can lead to short-term memory loss, hemorrhage, harm to retina, stroke, seizures, coma and death. What has been reported to us is that some of our HS students are engaging in this activity although we have not seen the social media posts. We have been told they are posting the "choking challenge" on instagram. This sharing of information is not intended to cause alarm, but rather to make sure parents are informed and given the opportunity to have conversations with their kids if they wish. We will also be following up with discussions in advisory and in their health classes.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you!

Kama'aina Pet Hospital Science Award
Le Jardin Academy is proud to offer for the first time a post-high school scholarship opportunity, the Kama'aina Pet Hospital Science Award, thanks to the generosity of LJA parents Erik and Deanna Pegg.
Erik and Deanna have been veterinarians for over 10 years, and are the owners of Kama'aina Pet Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii. They are passionate about animals and the community they serve, and got to where they are today through hard work and sacrifice. They hope to inspire and support students who share the same drive, work ethic, and commitment to the field of science as they do. Whether it's for books, a flight home, housing, or those little incidentals, this award of $1,500 is to help graduates of LJA pursuing a bachelor's or advanced degree in science afford the extras that truly make a difference in their educational success.
Applications for this scholarship opportunity are due February 15, 2020. Please see below information and contact scott.liedtke@lejardinacademy.org with any questions.
