Principal's Message by Alex Ramsvig, HS Principal
Aloha All,
As I type, our final I-term cohort is making their way back from Cambodia with all other groups safely home and back at school.
Before I begin, I want to thank Christina Hoe for all of her hard work as I-Term Coordinator this year for the high school. Christina's passion, dedication, and student-centered decision making has made this year another overall success. I would also like to thank all of our HS and MS teachers as well as community volunteers who led cohorts during the week and created experiences that students will remember for their whole lives.
In my early reflection on the program as a whole, I am reminded of a wonderful quote from Dewey, "Education is not preparation for life, education is life itself." To me, this quote speaks to the heart of our I-term program: a chance to fully embrace one of our greatest strengths as a school in helping to prepare students to live their best life beyond formal education.
We will soon be sending out a parent and student survey to elicit feedback for improvements for next year!
For the next few weeks, I will share some highlights from trips (I will not, unfortunately, be able to capture every experience!).
As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Have a great weekend!
Dean of Academics' Message by Lindsey Schiffler, HS Dean of Academics/DP Coordinator
Aloha Parents,
Now that second semester is under way, I want to remind families about two upcoming information sessions, one being for parents of sophomores. Please RSVP with Mrs. Broussard for this DP Information Night on January 28. As indicated on the invitation below, this session is an opportunity to learn about the DP program, including class selection for junior year. There will also be a chance to ask questions of myself, Mr. Ramsvig, and subject area teachers.
Another event is for all LJA parents who want to learn more about the DP in terms of marking in the IB and Internal Assessments. Even if you didn't attend the first two dates in the series, you are welcome to attend. Please join Melissa Handy and I on Thursday, Jan. 23 in the Wang from 6-7:30 p.m.
Let me know if you have any questions about these events.
Thank you! Dear Sophomores and Parents/Guardians of Sophomores:
Please join us on Tuesday, January 28th from 5:30-7:30pm in the Wang auditorium for an information session about the IB Diploma Programme. Message from the LJA Education Technology Team by Melissa Handy and Leslie Witten
It's time we have "the talk". . . about CYBERSECURITY!
Congratulations to our student artists who have won awards in this year's Scholastic Art Competition. This competition is the largest and one of the most competitive in the nation. In 2019, students submitted nearly 340,000 works of art and writing to the Scholastic Awards.
Submissions are juried by scholars in the visual and literary arts. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
Students receiving Gold Keys, Silver Keys or Honorable Mentions are celebrated within their communities through local exhibitions and ceremonies. Gold Key works are then judged nationally by an impressive panel of creative–industry experts to receive National Medals.
The Gold and Silver Key winners from our school will be on exhibit in the Hawaii State Art Museum from February 15th to March 14th 2020.
Thank you for your support!
MYP Personal Project Exhibition The Grade 10 Personal Project gives students an opportunity to inquire deeply into a subject of their choice and to create a product or outcome which they can proudly share with their community. Please join us on Wednesday, February 26th from 5-7:30 p.m. in the Wang Auditorium for the Class of 2022's Exhibition celebrating the knowledge, skills and attitudes that helped these students accomplish this year long project.
