It has been a whirlwind of a week and all MS students are back in full action after I-Term. We would appreciate your valuable feedback on the MS Impact Term 2020 Parent Survey.
Many classes have started new units this week, so it's a great time to check in and talk about what they're learning in their classes. Next Friday, January 24th, you will be receiving your child's Semester 1 report card. Please read through this guide to Understanding your Child's Report Card and feel free to email me with any questions.

Student Stories from I-Term
Sailing Trip Terrin J., Dena B., & Arwen R.
This 2019-20 school year, 8th graders had the option to apply between two high school I-term courses, including "Around the Islands Makani Olu Sailing Trip". Three 8th grade students applied Terrin J., Dena B., and Arwen R., and were accepted in the course. We had the chance to set and strike sails, drive, anchor, and live a 5-day sailor life. We had a life-changing experience, learning new things, seeing new sights and exploring the beautiful Hawaiian waters. We are thankful for the position to be able to have a voyage within nature and the people of the Makani Olu. Dena's favorite moment was when a whale dove under the boat and splashed on the other side. Terrin's favorite part of the voyage was when we chanted the oli and a whale popped up when we finished chanting. Arwen's favorite part was when she jumped in the water, surrounded by fish. We saw dolphins, whales, turtles, and tons of fish, throughout the journey. During the voyage, we sailed around Molokai, Lanai and Maui and the waters in between them.
Tokyo Trip & Manga Art Jaxon H. This year I applied for an Independent I-term in Tokyo for a one-week private art class to learn Japanese cartoon art called manga. In the class I mainly focused on anatomical sketches. I practiced sketches of eyes and mouths for different manga characters. My teacher was a professional manga artist from Tokyo named Nao Yazawa. For every class, I finished an inked and colored drawing. Also at the end of the lessons I made a 4-panel comic, that was fully inked and colored. This was a very valuable experience because I got to see the local side of Japan and because I love to draw manga. Having a professional teacher/mentor there to guide me and give me tips and pointers was very helpful when learning. It gave me a look at how professionals draw manga and it showed me different ways to draw manga. I definitely recommend this one-week private course if you like anime or manga. It is a great experience with a lot to offer.
