PRESCHOOL APPRECIATES OUR POSTAL WORKERS Our Pre-K learners are taking action in their community by learning about essential workers and finding ways to thank them for their service. Yesterday they made thank you notes for their postal service workers and left them in their mailboxes. What a great surprise! MAHALO TRUSTEES AND UAHI GRILL Wow! The Trustees are at it again! First pizza, now Uahi Grill! As a mahalo to our employees, LJA Trustees treated our employees and their families to dinner last night at Uahi Grill. Each employee received a dinner for four including garlic chicken, kalua pork, Korean steak and garlic ahi served with rice and a Waipoli green salad. The vegetarian option included furikake tofu and black bean eggplant. Trustees delivered the meals to the cars and greeted them with signs, waves, and social distance hugs. MASKS FOR OUR KUPUNA More than 50 masks were sent to our grandparents thanks to our LJA mask-making 'ohana. The effort is part of our collective mission to get masks to anyone in need. If you need a mask or are able to help, email Christina Hoe. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT Amelia Butala '20 is a member of LJA's 15-year club, having entered the school in prekindergarten.
She has valued LJA as a small community where it is easy to immerse in a variety of clubs and activities. "I participate in every club and activity that interests me, so I've ended up in - arguably - far too many," Amelia said. She has been active in tutoring, tennis, Spanish Honor Society (President), National Honor Society, International Thespian Society (Secretary), Student Government (President), Amnesty International (Treasurer), Gay-Straight Alliance, and Yearbook. She also had an internship in the LJA business office, and served as an LJA Ambassador.
"The highlight of my time at LJA was serving as the president of the High School Student Government. As a very shy and self-conscious lower school student, my ability to carry out speeches and pep rallies in front of the entire high school this year shows that I've truly grown over my time at LJA," Amelia said.
Amelia is headed to Stanford University and is contemplating a major in communications and media. "I like listening to and helping people tell their stories; this might be a pretty good place to start," she said. She's looking forward to "networking opportunities, befriending the next Snapchat CEO, and most importantly - the campus' abundance of vegetarian food" at Stanford. I'm not sure what clubs I'll join or the career path I'll take, but I'll be happy as long as I'm entertained and having fun," Amelia shared. |
