June 5, 2020 Lower School Principal Message Aloha Families, This last weekly message is full of mixed feelings as I'm excited to return home to Sweden but very sad to leave all of you here in Hawai'i. I am grateful to have spent the past seven years here with you and your keiki, working with a staff of passionate educators and developing the program. Thank you all for the incredibly touching day on Wednesday, from the well wishes in the loop to the Tribute video. I'm humbled by your generous words and thoughtfulness and I will treasure the video and notes for years to come. If you were unable to join our morning circle, here is a link to share with your family. I wish you all a safe summer and best wishes in the journey ahead. Mahalo & a hui hou - Majken
LS STAFF SPLASH INTO SUMMER In case you missed it, here is the Splash into Summer video made by Mrs. Dodson! Thank you Mrs. Dodson for allowing us to have some splash time, even through our distance!
GRADE 5 MOVING UP HERE is the video of our 5th grade Moving Up Ceremony.
RESOURCES FOR PROTESTS It seems superficial to sandwich this crucial topic in my weekly message, but it's important enough to not ignore. If you wish to have resources how to best talk to your child about the current events happening in the United States, here are some great options shared by our ohana: APPRECIATIONS Thank you Amy Lu and Denice Kolodny for all their dedication as our LS PFA reps. Even at the very last day of school they hustled to get our fifth graders sundae gift cards, as we usually treat these students to a sundae buffet for graduating elementary. Their work all year has served all students and we send our love back! Melissa Handy, our Director of Technology has worked endlessly to set up Zoom meets, edit and make recordings, make sure students have devices, and without her help, as well as her fellow colleagues, Leslie Witten and Ryan Rimsinth, our distance learning would not have worked. THANK YOU! Thank you Mrs. Praetorius and Mrs. Omori for running another successful year with Student Council. The end of year Talent Shows on Flipgrid were awesome! Thank you to all students who participated!
REPORT CARDS Due to varying home situations during our distance learning time, report cards will reflect comments only without any indicators. This was the only reasonable and authentic way for us to give feedback on learning during this historical pandemic. Subject areas will list curriculum covered. Grade 5 students will still receive their PYP Exhibition rubric. Report cards will be created in ManageBac on June 12th.
EXTENDED DAY SIGN-UP FOR 2020-21 Based on current conditions, LJA is planning for a face-to-face return to school in August. If you will need care for your child after school next fall, please register here today for Extended Day 2020 -2021 school year. Please note that space is limited, first-come-first-served.
SEESAW LEARNING JOURNALS If your child is in fifth grade or moving, please take time to download his/her Seesaw journal as it will not be available once the school year ends. Click here for instructions to download. For all returning to grades K-5, the journals will follow "up" with your child at LJA. Aloha, Majken
