Principal's Message by Alex Ramsvig, HS Principal October 1, 2020
Aloha All,
As a reminder, although we will be offering Junior and Senior students off campus privileges (with the completion of a form seeking parental and administrative permission) next week, until then, students need parental permission to leave early or come in late (even during an Impact block).
IMPACT BLOCK
I am really excited to share one of our initiatives that has been wildly popular with students thus far. Our Impact Blocks are a new take on study halls and free periods. For those who have not yet heard about them, we have designed these blocks around two central tenets:
Our school is not simply a place where students gain the skills and knowledge related to core academic subject learning; it is a rich learning community that cultivates happy, healthy, balanced, and caring individuals. As such, our Impact Blocks are periods throughout the day when students get to choose how they spend their time. Options include:
We are granting students a good deal of freedom to make their own decisions. Unless a student has been assigned to work with a particular teacher for extra help, then students are moving about our campus in designated areas with intentional freedom. We will, of course, pull back this privilege if a student is unable to follow the simple guidelines. But, overall, it is a shift to providing students with more autonomy and ownership of their learning, offering them a chance to rise to meet our expectations and to prepare for their next phase of young adult life.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Aloha parents, guardians, students, and community members:
Now that October is upon us, it is important to inform you of several key dates specifically relating to ManageBac. Similar to last year, we will continue to use ManageBac as a resource for information about curriculum, assessments, and report cards. On Oct. 9, you will be able to find up-to-date information regarding unit plans, assessments, and teacher feedback. After reviewing ManageBac on this date, please contact your student's teachers if there are questions or concerns. In this way, students will know where they stand and can troubleshoot any issues prior to the Oct. 30 midterm date. Please note that we will be publishing midterm marks in each semester to help parents and students better understand their progress between formal semester report cards. These interim marks will not be reported on transcripts; instead, they are designed as a mid-semester progress check.
As always, let me know if you have any questions.
Lindsey

Class of 2022
Junior year ushers our students into a new level of responsibility and celebration. College preparation is one of several endeavors your child will undertake this year. Our goal at Le Jardin Academy is to guide them through the process, dispel myths and rumors while helping to keep college admissions in its proper perspective. We want them, and you, to remember that college admission is not the culminating capstone of their academic career – quite the opposite. It is the first step in a completely new journey that will expose them to new opportunities and remarkable experiences.
The Global Read Aloud: One Book to Connect the World
How it works:
We have connected with a school in Europe and North America. Students will be able to share their opinions and responses to the books with students through FlipGrid. Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park is a powerful, touching, multilayered book about a girl determined to fit in and realize her dreams: getting an education, becoming a dressmaker in her father's shop, and making at least one friend. Acclaimed, award-winning author Linda Sue Park has placed a young half-Asian girl, Hanna, in a small town in America's heartland, in 1880. Hanna's adjustment to her new surroundings, which primarily means negotiating the townspeople's almost unanimous prejudice against Asians, is at the heart of the story. Narrated by Hanna, the novel has poignant moments yet sparkles with humor, introducing a captivating heroine whose wry, observant voice will resonate with readers. This is NOT a history book. This is a book about the here and now. A book to help us better understand why we are where we are. A book about race.
Through a gripping, fast-paced, and energizing narrative written by beloved award-winner Jason Reynolds, this book shines a light on the many insidious forms of racist ideas--and on ways readers can identify and stamp out racist thoughts in their daily lives.
Global collaboration is necessary to show students that they are part of something bigger than them. That the world needs to be protected and that we need to care for all people.
