PICTURED ABOVE: Mahalo PFA for the frozen treats! Our Middle School students took a break from work for a physically-distanced ice cream social. Aloha kākou,
As we head into Fall Break having not had a COVID incident since our phased return-to-campus began four weeks ago, I am thankful to our students, staff and families for their kōkua in keeping us safe. Each of you has made sacrifices in order to mitigate the virusʻ spread in our community--reducing interactions beyond your ʻohana, shopping online versus in stores, scaling back travel to the extent practicable--each act has served to enhance the safety of all. Mahalo nui!
While much of our attention since March has been focused on understanding and managing transmission of the virus; an even greater focus has been given to teaching and learning throughout the pandemic. Imagine our teachers shifting not just pedagogical practices and adopting new teaching tools but literally changing mindset in order to be effective in our COVID world. It is probably akin to the disruption that occurred in retail when Amazon rolled into town. In order to thrive within our new context, we had to adapt: how we collaborate, how we engage families and students, the kinds of learning activities best suited to asynchronous learning, how we manage our "classrooms" (the term itself made somewhat obsolete by the virtual environment). It would be a shame if we didnʻt take away enduring lessons from this experience.
