Principal's Message by Alex Ramsvig, HS Principal
December 3, 2020
Aloha All,
I hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable Thanksgiving break.
We are obviously moving quickly into the end of the semester with students completing their final summative projects and preparing for exams. This week students received their exam schedule for the week of December 14th. As in previous years, students are only expected to be on campus if they have an exam and otherwise may remain at home studying. If you would like your child on campus at other times during the normal school day, please complete this form and submit to the HS Administrative Assistant Ms. Stacey Surina.
We will also host a "live" winter concert for the HS and MS Chorus and HS band on December 17th. It will be in "webinar" format, meaning that parents and students can watch the previously recorded performances with alumni hosts introducing and providing commentary. The entire evening will be recorded and sent out later so it can be shared with relatives and friends. The link to the evening can be found here, the password is peace.
As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions.
Alex Ramsvig

Factors in Admission Decisions
After 20 years of working in the college process, I wanted to take a moment to share a bit of wisdom. There is no magic formula when it comes to college admission decisions. Many small, selective colleges pay greater attention to personal statements and essays, teacher and counselor recommendations, leadership experiences and the individual talents of applicants. They typically offer the chance for a face-to-face interview. Large, public state university systems often use a mathematical formula based on a student's grade point average (GPA) and scores on the SAT or ACT (during non Covid times). They tend to favor in-state applicants. Regardless of the college's evaluation system, students should authentic and present a well-rounded picture of their skills, experience and personal traits. Applications should highlight their ability to succeed at each particular institution and what they can contribute to student life on campus.
In the 2019 edition of NACAC's annual State of College Admission report, you'll find up-to-date information about the admission process for first-time freshmen. Learn more about factors in the admission decision process by clicking the following: NACAC Report Scott

LJA Wellness Message Date: 12/3/2020 By Sean Landau and Jessica Osborne
As students prepare for finals, emotions are at an all time high. How we internalize, process and communicate our feelings in stressful situations typically impacts those closest to us. Giving yourself permission to feel takes practice.
The Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence created a RULER approach to help kids or teens Recognize, Understand, Label, Express and Regulate emotions. Buckle up! When you're feeling highs and lows from the rollercoaster of emotions please use this helpful journaling tool as resource: RULER Skills
