Aloha Parents and Student Athletes,
Coaches and athletes have been busy preparing for the start of their respective fall seasons. We're excited to announce that our girls intermediate volleyball team is the first to get off the ground this weekend with a double header at Mid Pacific Institute. Unfortunately, no spectators are allowed at this time.
We are also ecstatic about new storage containers and lights for our soccer programs! There were numerous individuals who supported the idea of 6 sets of lights on our soccer field-and they've arrived! This will help the Soccer Academy and ILH soccer teams to practice at night, which is especially helpful in the winter when the days are so short. We also have a storage container thanks to a generous donation from Matson. This allows us to keep those new lights and other soccer equipment safely stored behind the Soccer Academy offices, in the gravel parking lot at the end of the soccer field.

-LJA will provide one way transportation to the practices for those who need it. -Students can drive themselves. -Runners will not be able to bring backpacks on the bus, so arrangements will have to be made to collect those after practice from school. -The race meet schedule has been extended longer than usual this year due to a shift in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association's (HHSAA) state calendar modifications. Please see Coach Jenny for more details.

Girls VARSITY Soccer Interest? The Athletic Department is attempting to bring back our girls varsity soccer team as one of our stand alone sports. If you are interested in joining the team this winter, please let the Athletic Director, Jana Fraser jana.fraser@lejardinacademy.org know by September 10th.
ILH Announcements On August 4th, the ILH released additional Return to Play Guidelines for the upcoming fall season. These changes are effective immediately. They are as follows: -Athletes in high contact sports such as cheer, football and water polo are required to be vaccinated OR receive a negative PCR-NT COVID test before each contest. Obtaining this test and associated costs, will be the responsibility of the student-athlete. Results of this test should be sent directly to our school nurse, school.nurse@lejardinacademy.org. If the results are not received for any reason before 3pm on game day, that student will not be allowed to participate in the contest.
Spectators Update The ILH has confirmed a contract with Spectrum OC16 that allows for Livestreaming of ILH events. Unfortunately, this means that spectators are not allowed at any events through the fall season. This update was announced on 8/25/21 and is effective immediately.
Girls Intermediate Soccer at LJA Is Coming Back! We are pleased to announce that LJA will again definitely have their own stand alone girls intermediate soccer team this year. This is great news! We've gotten so much interest in the program that we are inquiring if there are interested players in girls varsity soccer as well. Details regarding soccer and other winter sports will be forthcoming in future LJA Weekly newsletters.
Weight Room Capacity The weight room capacity in the gym will be capped again as it was last year. The limit is 10 student-athletes plus the Strength and Conditioning Coach Dave Cosier, david.cosierjr@lejardinacademy.org. Diligent equipment cleaning after every use, masking and distance protocols will be in effect. Sign ups will be created by Coach Dave and will be prioritized for sports teams in season.
Bulldog League In lieu of CSAL sports, LJA will be hosting Bulldog League volleyball for 4th - 6th grade boys and girls. Hosted by the Le Jardin Athletic Department, the Bulldog League will cost $20 to absorb the cost of a t-shirt jersey, which athletes will keep for themselves. The $20 fee will be collected after registration closes (September 27) through the Spirit Store website. Registration closes on September 27. Contact taylor.souza@lejardinacademy.org with any questions. Mahalo!
Thank you!!
Taylor Souza, Athletics Manager
Message from our Athletic Trainer Welcome back students! In light of the new school year, I want to reintroduce myself and LJA athletic training, as well as give out a few reminders for everyone.
My name is Justin Drain, I am a board certified and licensed athletic trainer. I provide full time athletic training services to the LJA community. Athletic training services at LJA are aimed at preventing, recognizing, treating and rehabilitating injuries sustained by student athletes (staff too!). I collaborate with our team physicians to provide high quality health care, referral to physicians when needed, and educate students on athletic health and wellness.
Participation Form New Due Date The Athletic participation form is an annual form that needs to be completed by a physician in order to practice or compete in ILH sports. The LJA Athletic Department is moving away from accepting these forms all year long, to a summer due date similar to when other school health forms are uploaded into the Magnus Health system. This is partially due to a mandate by the ILH office of a 4 day waiting period for athletes whose forms expire or are turned in late during the season. Observing this policy has been problematic in the past, and resulted in some athletes having to miss competitions. Please have your completed Sports Participation form (which can be downloaded at Sports Participation Form '21-'22) completed by the first day of school, or for fall athletes prior to the first day of practice. If you find yourself in the position where a second sports physical is needed, here are a few options with associated charges that may be less costly than going through your Primary Care Physician.
CVS Minute Clinic $69 (Longs Drugs stores) Urgent Care Hawaii $50 (660 Kailua Rd.) Windward Urgent Care/Premier Medical Group Hawaii $50 (Castle Adventist Health – Kaneohe Office building) Braun Urgent Care $85 (130 Kailua Rd., Kailua Beach Center)
Sports Rules Clarified What is a libero in volleyball? A libero is a player who wears a different color jersey from the rest of the team so they can be identified. They play in the back row for one of the team members, and don't count as a substitution. A libero is not allowed to play in the front row, meaning not in a front row rotation.
