Aloha Parents and Athletes,
A few of our fall sport game seasons have begun. It has been exciting to see the athletes back in action. Thank you for your flexibility when the league changed their policy relating to spectators. Apologies the fall season, that the ILH isn't allowing spectators at any of the league events. Many of those contests will be livestreamed by the host schools, including all home games at LJA. More information is listed further in this newsletter.

Spectator and Livestreaming Update The ILH has confirmed a contract with Spectrum OC16 that allows for Livestreaming of ILH events. Unfortunately, this means that spectators are not allowed at any events through the fall season. This update was announced on 8/25/21 and is effective immediately. This change is because of the recent increase in COVID-19 numbers and is done in an attempt to create a more safe environment for players and coaches. The link to watch our own Bulldogs home games online will be uploaded to the bio section of @lejardinathletics Instagram 15 min. before the start of the match. instagram.com/lejardinathletics - it will stream through YouTube.

Girls Intermediate Soccer at LJA Is Coming Back! We are pleased to announce that LJA will again have our own stand alone girls intermediate soccer team this year. This is great news! We received so much interest in the program that we are inquiring if there are interested players in girls varsity soccer as well. Details regarding soccer and other winter sports will be forthcoming in future LJA Weekly newsletters.

Returning to Exercise After a Long Break
You took a break from exercising due to injury, time restraints, no access to a gym, etc. and would like to get back into shape or start playing a sport again...how can you make sure you do not get hurt in this process?
The experts tell us slow and steady is the key. When you take time off of exercising and stretching you quickly lose strength, power and flexibility. Trying to lift too much weight, or forcing your body into a stretch or range of motion that it's not ready for yet can result in injury. Doing too much too soon can also result in the breakdown of muscles and delayed onset muscle soreness, which will inhibit progress. Starting slow will help you make safer and quicker progress.
This principle applies to the weight room, as well as athletics. In the weight room start with little to no weight, focus on maintaining proper form and re-building muscle endurance with high reps. Gradually increase load over time. If you are returning to a sport, make sure you properly warm up and then get back to the basic mechanics of the sport, essentially re-teaching your body the muscle memory of playing a sport. Day one should not be full intensity competition.
Bulldog League In lieu of CSAL sports, LJA will host Bulldog League volleyball for 4th - 6th grade boys and girls. Hosted by the Le Jardin Athletic Department, the Bulldog League will cost $20 to absorb the cost of a t-shirt jersey, which athletes will keep for themselves. The $20 fee will be collected after registration closes (September 27) through the Spirit Store website. Registration closes on September 27. Contact taylor.souza@lejardinacademy.org with any questions. Mahalo!
Thank you!!
Taylor Souza, Athletics Manager
Weight Room Capacity The weight room capacity in the gym will be capped again as it was last year. The limit is 10 student-athletes plus the Strength and Conditioning Coach Dave Cosier, david.cosierjr@lejardinacademy.org. Diligent equipment cleaning after every use, masking and distance protocols will be in effect. Sign ups will be created by Coach Dave and will be prioritized for sports teams in season.
Sports Rules Clarified Water Polo... Did you know? -Water polo players in possession of the ball can pass the ball forwards, sideways or backwards. -Water polo players must tread water and are not allowed to touch the bottom of the pool – with the exception of the goalkeeper. -The ball can be advanced by passing with one hand, or swimming with the head above water and the ball between the arms so that it rides on the wave created by the swimmer (this is called 'dribbling').
Are you interested in club water polo? Please see the registration link here for Windward Water Polo.
