Coaching Certifications Did you know all of our coaches must complete annual coaching certifications in multiple areas. The National Federation of High School Sports (NFHS) has mandated all coaches complete the following classes:
Heat Illness-This course his designed to provide the fundamentals of a strong heat acclimatization plan, and guidelines for limiting activities to account for changing environmental conditions and other contributing risk factors. Highlights are the importance of an appropriate hydration plan, and establishing an Emergency Action Plan in case of a suspected heat stroke.
In addition, by the third year of coaching, a 5 hour Fundamentals of Coaching certification is required. This NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching course provides a unique student-centered curriculum for interscholastic teacher/coaches, assisting them in creating a healthy and age-appropriate athletic experience that supports the educational mission of schools across the country. Hawaii Concussion Awareness and Management Program (HCAMP) September 17th was National Concussion Awareness Day. It is a campaign to encourage everyone to take a moment to really focus on the importance of reporting concussions.
Sports can be a very important part of a child's life. It gives them a sense of identity, achievement and helps them experience what it's like to be a part of team. Research has shown that athletes don't report concussions because they don't want to lose playing time or let their teammates or coaches down, which can be a potentially dangerous decision, as there are a number of short or long term effects that could result from a concussion. Effects that can impact daily living.
Athletes, coaches and others are encouraged to take HCAMP's Pledge to Report, promising to take concussions seriously, report potential concussions and encourage teammates and others to do the same. To take the pledge, please visit https://hcamp.info/pledge.
Parents, attached here, you'll find a concussion fact sheet as an additional resource. Student athletes, attached here, you'll find a concussion fact sheet applicable to your recovery if a concussion is sustained.
Spectator and Livestreaming Update The ILH has confirmed a contract with Spectrum OC16 that allows for Livestreaming of ILH events. Unfortunately, this means that spectators are not allowed at any events through the fall season. This update was announced on 8/25/21. This change is because of the recent increase in COVID-19 numbers, and is done in an attempt to create a safer environment for players and coaches.

HBA Off Season Conditioning Rules for Winter and Spring Sports Please be aware of the off season (white period) rules: The white period for winter and spring sports in the 2021-22 school year only: coaches may work with students beyond the normal allowance of strength and conditioning, and may work with them on individual skills and drills no more than 2 times per week, with a 2-hour maximum time limit per session. However during this time there are no games or scrimmages with other teams-just individual skill work. Participation during this off season conditioning period is not mandatory. A Note on Injuries, from our Athletic Trainer What needs to happen if an athlete gets injured participating in a sport? Any injury sustained while playing a LJA sanctioned sport MUST be reported to the school's Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) by coach and athlete as soon as possible for evaluation, physician referral, and/or treatment.
If an injury occurs at practice without the ATC present (ex: ATC is at an away event with another team or practice is off site), contact ATC as soon as possible. If the student-athlete sustains any injury requiring removal from practice, parents MUST be notified.
If an injury occurs while at an away contest without the LJA ATC present, student-athletes may be evaluated by the host school ATC. Student-athletes are expected to report in person to the LJA ATC on the next school day. If a student-athlete is injured outside of a LJA sanctioned sport (ex: travel or club team), they are ENCOURAGED to report to the ATC for evaluation, physician referral, and/or treatment. If a Student-Athlete will miss school because of an injury, they should contact the LJA ATC with an update on their status.
Injury Evaluation and Treatment The ATC will be available for injury evaluation and treatment daily after school, 2:45pm-7pm pm, game schedule permitting. Student-Athletes are NOT allowed to miss class for injury treatment. Physician Visits Any student-athlete that is seen by a physician for an injury MUST submit a clearance note to the ATC. This note must include a return to play/clearance date and be signed by the physician. The note must also include an injury diagnosis and therapeutic recommendations if they are to do rehab with the ATC.
Acceptable physician notes for injuries include: the "physician referral form" provided by the ATC, OR a note on the physician's letterhead or prescription pad with the previously listed information.
If a Student-Athlete sees a physician for an injury, they WILL NOT be allowed to return to practice or games until a clearance note is received, NO EXCEPTIONS.
Emergency Transport/ Emergency Room Treatment Any Student-Athlete with an injury or illness that requires transport to or treatment in an emergency department must make follow up appointments with their family doctor or appropriate specialist, and be cleared, in writing, by that physician. Student-Athletes WILL NOT be allowed to return to practice or games until a clearance note is received, NO EXCEPTIONS. Emergency Department discharge papers will NOT be accepted for return to play.
Return to Play Return to play is an individualized decision as each person will heal at different rates. Depending upon injury severity, student-athletes may be restricted in return to play. Student-Athletes who were seen by a physician must have appropriate clearance, in writing, from that physician before they will be allowed to return to play.

Sports Rules Clarified The Hawaii Association of High School Sports (HHSAA) has a sport season calendar for varsity sports that occur during the school year. It is recommended that the start date for each sport be a maximum of 13 weeks prior to the state tournament but the COVID 19 pandemic has created some exemptions to this suggestion. Not all sports offered at LJA have state tournaments and are considered HHSAA sports. Sports like kayaking, boys water polo, sailing and precision riflery occur within only the ILH. You can find a copy of the HHSAA calendar Here
