UPDATED COVID GUIDELINES The Hawaii State Department of Health (HDOH) published new Health Guidance for K-12 Schools on August 16, 2022. LJA has updated its Routine Disease Control Framework (RDCF) to reflect these changes, which take effect Monday, August 22, as follows: - COVID-positive individuals may return-to-campus on Day 6 following isolation provided they are 24 hours fever-free with improved symptoms and remain masked through Day 10
- Close Contacts may return-to-school immediately, mask until Day 5, and test-to-stay on Day 5 (same for household/non-school close contacts)
- Screening Testing now limited to high-contact/high-risk activities
- School responsibility to HDOH to report clusters, school absence rate >10%, class or grade absence rate > 20%
Based on hospitalizations and community transmission, the CDC's current Community Alert Level is Medium. LJA remains at Response Level 2 at which indoor masking is strongly recommended. Why is Masking Strongly Recommended? At LJA, we recommend masking because we value in-person learning and continuity of instruction. Student absences due to COVID are disruptive and cost five or more days of lost learning. A single teacher's absence, however, is even more disruptive as it affects the quality of teaching and learning for entire classrooms and grade levels for five days or more. For the sake of learning, we must keep our teachers healthy and safe. How you can help Your kōkua is critical as we await the arrival of the next sub-variant wave. Our teachers and their families have made sacrifices to remain healthy and present by limiting their social interactions and travel and continuing to mask indoors. You can help, particularly while the CDC Community Alert Level is Medium, by also avoiding settings in which the likelihood of transmission is substantially greater (e.g., crowded indoor settings or enclosed spaces). By exercising a modicum of prudence, we can show our aloha for our teachers and community. |

| PADDLING PROWESS: LJA STUDENTS EXCEL ON THE WATER Paddling has a storied history in Hawai'i and holds an important place in our community and throughout the Hawaiian Islands. There are now more than 60 canoe clubs in the state of Hawai'i, and the sport has also gained international popularity, with Hawaiian outrigger canoes serving as the standard canoe used in races throughout the world. Several LJA students are avid paddlers and recently made big waves in the world of outrigger canoeing! We recognize 8th graders Anthony Klutz, Nathan Stoutemyer, Christoph Gutierrez, and Gabriel Bradley, who recently competed in the 2022 Hawaiian Racing Canoe Association (HRCA) State Championship at Ke'ehi Lagoon Park and not only came in first place but set a new state record for their age group. We also recognize LJA 10th graders Zayn Khan and Carter Tseu, who represented Hawai'i while competing in the 2022 International Va'a races in Windsor, United Kingdom and won 3 silver medals and 1 bronze medal. Way to go, boys! |
