PICTURED ABOVE: Designers at work! This week on campus, Mr. Barnes' 8th grade Design class took a hands-on approach to learning what makes flight possible. Student teams are building prototype gliders to learn the basics of wing aerodynamics and the relationship between weight and center of gravity. Next, they'll add motors to their planes and learn to fly them. Meanwhile, 9th graders in Mr. Barnes' 6Rs class, Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair, are weaving baskets using discarded baling straps. These straps secure boxes to pallets when goods are shipped to Hawai'i and are typically tossed in the garbage. The high school design students are infusing that trash with renewed purpose, making baskets to help with classroom organization. |
