HEAD OF SECONDARY DIVISION Alex Ramsvig After a few weeks of school, it is time to check in with your child about their daily school workload. One of the most common questions I get from parents is, "How much homework should my child have?" The short, unhelpful answer is, it depends! A more satisfactory answer is that every student in grades 6-12 at LJA should find our academic program rigorous, not onerous. As every student learns differently, and works at a different pace, the actual amount of work you see happening at home will vary. To start the conversation, ask how they perceive the workload, and pay attention to any extremes. Students should not be up into the early hours regularly (or ever!), nor should they have "no work" to do. If you find that there is a mismatch, now is a great time to reach out to the particular teacher and find out how things are going in class. One goal of our vertically articulated curriculum is to help prepare students to be able to self-regulate their workload before they leave for college. Like any skill, however, it takes time to develop! Have a great weekend! Alex |

| ATTENDANCE REMINDERS If you are picking up your student early, please use the LJA Attendance Form in order to let us know and to help avoid a delay in the release of your student. You will need to fill out the form for all early releases, including if your student drives. For seniors who have open campus, the attendance form must be completed by a parent when a student leaves campus, other than during an open impact or lunch. Change in pickup location: Students in grades 9-12 can be picked up for early release from the HS Building, they do not need to be picked up from the loop. |

REPORT AN ABSENCE/LATE ARRIVAL/EARLY PICK-UP This year, Kindergarten through Grade 12 attendance should be reported using the LJA Attendance Form. This new procedure replaces the SchoolPass app, attendance line and attendance email and can be accessible through your phone. Through this form families report absences, late arrivals, early pick-up or multiple day absences. Please contact seon.lecher@lejardinacademy.org for questions regarding the form. EXTENDED ABSENCE REQUEST PROCEDURES It is the responsibility of each family to request extended absence approval in a timely manner from the administration prior to any absence not due to illness or family emergency. Parents must contact the Dean of Academics for prior approval (from the LJA 2022-2023 Code of Conduct in the Parent Portal). |

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Patrick Strine, Student Activities Coordinator
Ask your students about school activities and what's going on! There are lots of opportunities for club involvement. Clubs will be up and running next week during community block. All students were emailed a signup link. Student Government Association (SGA) is a student-led group representing the interest of all students in the decision-making process. SGA's elected student representatives and general assembly members work with teachers and administrators to positively impact our school culture and environment through events, activities, fundraising, and student representation at selected Board of Trustees meetings. Student Government Association (SGA) campaigns are right around the corner and the application process has begun! |
