Indulging your sweet tooth this Halloween season? An LJA first grader can now tell you all about how chocolate is made! First graders got an immersive behind the scenes look at the unique process of farming cacao on a recent field trip to 21 Degrees Chocolate Factory in Kaneohe. Their "how we organize ourselves" unit incorporates an inquiry into community systems, and in this case a deep dive into how systems provide and distribute food. A school field trip has never been sweeter!

REFRESH AND STRENGTHEN: 10 YEARS OF DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
Students come across issues with digital citizenship on a daily basis, especially as they grow into their tween and teen years. Across campus last week, many of our classrooms participated in the 10th Annual Digital Citizenship Week to help students refocus and strengthen the skills and attitudes needed to navigate their digitally connected lives. The adults who are raising and mentoring young people can help get the right messages across by understanding more about the complex reality kids are growing up in. Check out this Harvard School of Education Podcast and transcript to get a glimpse into teens' online worlds and learn strategies to connect with and help the young people in your life.
BLOOD DRIVE NOVEMBER 2
SECONDARY DIVISON LIBRARY 8:00 A.M- 2:00 P.M.
LJA is partnering with Blood Bank of Hawaii to host a Blood Drive. Student Blood Drive Leaders Leah Webb, Catherine Hesse, Arwen Revere, Gio Oliva, Hanalei Agamite, and Massimo Flumian want to share the many benefits of giving blood in the lead up to the drive. This final week, Catherine Hesse writes, "Donating blood can not only save numerous peoples' lives, but also is an act of kindness that will be felt and appreciated by individuals of the greater community. Giving blood is giving the gift of life, because every donation is critical to patients with physical trauma, undergoing surgery, and conditions that require blood transfusions. Community and family are at the core of Hawai'i's culture; if you are able to take just 1 hour out of your day on November 2, this short time will leave a tremendous impact that will be magnified and felt by members of our community and home." Join this important cause and sign up here. Questions about eligibility? Call 808-848-4745. Special thanks to our PFA for supporting this effort!
WELL BEING REMINDERS
Footwear: LJA's Student Handbook requires that students come to school with footwear. We continue to see cases of stubbed toes, stepping on bees, etc. We appreciate your cooperation in complying with this policy for the safety of our students.
Hydration: many students who arrive at the nurse's office are dehydrated. Please encourage your child to drink water throughout the day, and ensure they arrive on campus with a clean filled water bottle. Add a squeeze of citrus to make it more enticing!
Report Covid Cases. Parents are expected to notify the Health Room about positive cases in the household. Anyone testing positive should consult the nurse about proper return to school protocols. Please email email@example.com.

LJA has partnered once again with Kaiser Permanente to host a vaccine clinic to make boosters available to the LJA community. Eligibility: If you have recently contracted COVID, please consult your physician as to whether you are eligible for a booster at this time.
