Embracing our Community. Our LJA 'Ohana is committed to making our world a better place, and our students work hard to make an impact, locally and globally. Pictured above are Wild Kids students who, in partnership with Grade 10 Design, are working with regional nonprofit, Hui Mahi'ai Āina, whose mission is "to improve the quality of life for those in need and the houseless in the Waimanalo community." LJA students Gabriela Vasquez, Ella de Coligny, and Olivia Boyden recently launched a holiday donation drive to collect hygiene and household items to help provide essential items to houseless people. Way to make an impact! |

| REFUGE AND RESILIENCE: MEET MARIIA FROM UKRAINE Soon after the Prishchak family arrived from Ukraine for a Hawaiian vacation, Russia invaded and they found themselves stranded in the islands. As the weeks went by and the fighting ramped up, they took small steps to create an interim life on O'ahu, where they have become an integral part of the LJA 'Ohana. Their eldest daughter, Mariia, joined the Diploma Program in Grade 11. Mariia has graciously offered to share her experience with us. |

| SCREENAGERS:GROWING UP IN THE DIGITAL AGE VIRTUAL AND ONSITE SCREENING DECEMBER 13, 2022 | 6:00-7:30 P.M. WANG AUDITORIUM Planning to purchase a mobile phone, tablet, or laptop for your child this holiday season? Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well. In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Learn more about the film and see the trailer here. Join us in person or online for a hybrid LJA viewing of Screenagers and family discussion on DECEMBER 13, 2022 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Highly recommended for parents and students Grades 4 and up. There are two ways to participate in the community viewing: RSVP to attend online RSVP to attend in person in the Wang Auditorium (pizza for sale) More resources to support families in the digital age: LJA BYOD Policy Device Management Guideline for LJA Parents Screenagers Parent Guide: Family Rules to Consider that Help Kids Build Self-Control |

We also appreciate our Blue Crew and keiki that helped with our holiday events. Johanna and Kristy will also hand out cookies and milk after tonight's K-5 Winter Concert.
