A MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Aloha Parents and Students, If you are a student interested in joining the sailing team or Pac 5 softball teams in the spring, please contact the Athletic Department before January 1. No experience is necessary. Our varsity boys soccer team played their first home game in school history on our new soccer field on Wednesday, December 14. They played a memorable game, beating St. Louis 5-0. Our intermediate swimmers had an exciting end to their season! After diving scores were calculated, LJA had its highest team finish ever in the ILH, with the boys finishing second to Punahou. The girls came in fourth place overall, and we placed third in the combined team standings. Great work, everyone! Thank you, Jana Fraser |

| A Note from Swimming Coach Joe LJA had a great time hosting Iolani and Sacred Hearts. It was a another close match up, with Iolani narrowly winning the meet by 5 points. Once again, the team score was decided in the final relay! LJA won the womens meet and Iolani won the mens meet, catapulting Iolani to a combined meet victory. Highlights included Cate F setting a new pool record in the 50 free and the LJA girls setting a new pool record in the 200 free relay. LT Stancil won a few close battles and set new pool records in the process in the 50 free and the 200 free. Iolani came together in the last event of the meet to destroy the mens pool relay record by 10 seconds. Well done, everyone! |

A Message from the LJA Athletic Trainer Anatomy of Hamstring Strains The hamstring is a group of three large muscles located at the back of the thigh. It is considered a two-joint muscle, as it crosses the hip joint and knee joint, and its main function is to bend the knee and extend the hip. This biomechanical design allows for a powerful pushing-off motion during running and jumping in addition to absorbing an immense amount of force during deceleration. When the muscle is overloaded or stretched past its normal limit, injury can occur and have long lasting effects if not treated properly. Hamstring strains are divided into three types: grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3. Grade 1 is characterized by stretching and micro tears of muscle fibers with minimal swelling, pain, and impingement. Grade 2 is a partial tear, with moderate swelling, bruising, pain, a limited range of motion, and difficulty bearing weight. Grade 3 is a complete rupture of the muscle, with severe swelling, bruising, pain, little to no range of motion, and inability to bear weight. Muscle strains can be treated using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and cryotherapy for pain and swelling management. A functional rehabilitation program focusing on mobility and strengthening are one of many conservative options to treat and prevent hamstring strains. Stop by the athletic training room if you have any questions or want to know more. Mahalo, Kiana Kageyama |
