| A NOTE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL EARL KIM As a child, Christmas was my favorite holiday--for all the wrong reasons. I couldn't wait to "rip and tear" to see what great toys Santa had bestowed…and to which I was, no doubt, entitled. As I aged into adulthood, however, the script flipped and instead of being the receiver of all things wonderful, I became the expected supplier. It was not nearly as fun. The thoughtful gift-shopping, obligatory holiday gatherings, resplendent holiday decorating and gift-wrapping…just added to the usual workday stresses and familial duties. Regardless of your tradition, for those who recognize these holiday blues, I offer this reflection on one of my holiday favorites, The Bishop's Wife (1947). In the movie, a beleaguered bishop is immersed in running his cash-strapped church and fundraising for its future, a "gleaming cathedral on a hill." No doubt well intentioned in its conception, funding and construction, the cathedral, unfortunately, becomes the exclusive focus of the bishop's attention. In so doing, the bishop [Head of School] loses sight of the things that are most important--his family, his calling, and the meaning of the season. It takes a (dashing) angel to intercede, as only Cary Grant can, to help the bishop to see beyond the icon obstructing his view. For those who could use a holiday boost, you can watch the movie's uplifting conclusion, here, or you can simply join me in remembering why we are here, giving thanks for all that we have been given, and extending a helping hand to others around us. I hope that you donʻt do as I did as a boy; rather, I hope that the holiday inspires you to give thanks for the love and kindness of those who came before, for those surrounding you, today, and in that spirit, paying it forward. Mahalo nui a me hauʻoli makahiki hou from the LJA ʻOhana to yours. Peace on Earth, Earl

| TOYS FOR TOTS PROGRAM A huge mahalo to everyone who contributed toys for our keiki in need as part of this year's U.S. Marine Reserve Toys for Tots Program. What happens to all those toys now? Coordinators picked up them up today, and they will be stored in a central warehouse and sorted. At Christmas, Toys for Tots Coordinators, with the assistance of local social welfare agencies, church groups, and other local community agencies, will distribute the toys to less fortunate children in our community. We love contributing to this important effort! Photographed left to right and SURROUNDED BY TOYS are PFA President Mercedes Fagundes, Head of School Earl Kim, and PFA Communications Coordinator Ann Medeiros. Great effort, everyone! |
