A Message from the LJA Athletic Trainer Sudden Cardiac Arrest Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in athletics is more common than one might think. It is the leading cause of death in young athletes, according to the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) consensus and positions on SCA. Any athlete that collapses and is unresponsive should suspect SCA and immediate action needs to be taken. Time plays a critical role, so cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) retrieval should be administered within the first 5 minutes. Listed below are LJA's emergency preparedness protocols for preventing sudden cardiac arrest and keeping our athletes safe: - Seven AEDs are located throughout campus. Knowing their location can save crucial seconds.
- Coaches are required to have current First Aid and CPR Certification before the start of season.
- Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) are in place for every LJA sport facility as well as for off campus practice and event locations. These are practiced annually.
- Pre-participation screenings are a great preventative strategy to identify any underlying cardiac risks.
We develop these plans to prepare for emergency scenarios. Please stop by the athletic training room if you have any questions or want to learn more. Mahalo, Kiana |
