New Athletics Administrative Assistant
Please welcome our new Administrative Assistant in Athletics, Patty Gabriel! Patty was born and raised in Kailua, she graduated from the University of Hawaii, and she has spent the last decade working with the Department of Education, primarily in Physical Education and Health. Patty has worn many hats over the years as a Program Coordinator, Fitness Instructor, and full-time mom to two young girls. Mila is a Kindergartener at Le Jardin Academy, and Kobi will soon turn 3 years old and will start Preschool in the Fall. In her free time, Patty enjoys working out and spending time with her family. She is excited to join the LJA 'Ohana. Welcome, Patty!
A Note from Swimming Coach Joe:
We had a great week in the pool this week. Congrats to our JV team for a fantastic finish to the season placing fourth for both the girls and boys teams! Considering that the top 3 teams (Iolani, Punahou, and Kamehameha) are the top 3 teams in the state, this was a great finish for our squad. Since HHSAA swimming started in 1958, those three teams have won 60 of the 65 boys team championships awarded and 59 of the 65 girls team championships awarded (about 93% of all state team titles!). LJA will continue chasing on all 3 levels, knowing the breakthrough will happen soon!
Boys Varsity Soccer
The boys varsity team plays a make it or break it game on Saturday against PAC 5 at Waipio which will determine the rest of their season. Please come out and support our boys at 8:00 a.m. in Waipio.
Boys Varsity Basketball
Boys basketball will start an integrated Division 2 and 3 Single Elimination Tournament on February 1. We wish to congratulate our two seniors, Raymond Sevier and Noah St. Clair, who were celebrated on January 25.
Meet our Coaches
Joel Saito (left) and Scott Lietdke (right) have been our boys varsity soccer coaches for four seasons. The most recent highlight for the team was qualifying for the State tournament last year for the first time in school history!

How to Avoid Common Skin Infections and Diseases in Sports
Most bacterial infections are caused by wounds or open lesions on the skin that have been contaminated by sweat, blood, mucus, and saliva. Bacterial infections such as MRSA, impetigo, folliculitis, furuncles, carbuncles, and paronychia can be managed with antibacterial creams and/or drainage if necessary. In the case of MRSA, it's important to immediately isolate and report to a physician as it is highly infectious.
Viruses are a little trickier to manage, as they can lay dormant for years in the body without the host ever knowing they are infected. Viral infections such as herpes simplex and molluscum contagiosum are highly contagious and are transmitted through skin on skin contact and can be managed using antiviral medications.
Ringworm is a common fungal infection spread directly through the sharing of towels, soaps, soiled clothing, equipment, or indirectly through dirty locker rooms and showers. Characterized by its red, itchy, and identifiable ring-like shape, ringworm grows more rapidly when introduced to warm and moist environments such as between toes, under the arm, and around the groin. Fungal infections can be managed with topical antifungal creams.
Below are a few skin disease prevention tips:
- Avoid sharing towels, clothes, water bottles, razors and equipment with teammates
- Keep locker rooms and showers clean and sanitized
- Launder and/ or disinfect all clothes, equipment and gear daily
- Wash your hands often and shower daily with antibacterial/ antimicrobial soap
- Cover any open wounds or lesions with a bandage before activity
- Avoid whirlpools and common tubs if you have open wounds
- Examine your skin periodically and report any skin lesions or bumps to the athletic trainer
Stop by the athletic training room if you have any questions or want to learn more.
