A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY DIVISION Aloha All, We have many athletics competitions this weekend as well as the Grade 9-12 Winter Ball in town on Saturday! It should be a great weekend after a full week of school. As mentioned last week, if you have any questions about your child's report card, please reach out to the relevant teacher or to our outstanding academic Deans. As a follow-up to my email last week, our faculty has been exploring the use of AI technology in the classroom. Additionally, I have been experimenting and actually asked it to generate part of this newsletter. Below, is the unedited AI-created "5 Benefits of the International Baccalaureate" for our students (Generated January 25, 2023): - Preparing for university: The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is known for its rigor and academic excellence, and it is highly respected by universities around the world. Completing the program can help to prepare students for the demands of university-level coursework.
- Developing critical thinking skills: The IB program places a strong emphasis on critical thinking, analysis, and independent learning. These skills are essential for success not only in university but also in any career path.
- Global perspective: The IB program encourages students to think globally and to understand and appreciate different cultures and perspectives. This can help students to become more open-minded and aware of the world around them.
- Building self-confidence: The IB program is challenging and requires students to take on a lot of responsibility for their own learning. Completing the program can help students to build self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment.
- Access to resources and support: The IB program provides students with access to a wide range of resources and support, including experienced teachers and a global community of IB students and alumni. This can help students to achieve their full potential and to succeed in their studies.
Have a great week! Alex Ramsvig Head of Secondary |
SAVE THE DATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME INFORMATIONAL NIGHT FOR GRADE 10 STUDENTS & FAMILIES FEBRUARY 16, 6:00-8:00 P.M. WANG AUDITORIUM Curious about the Diploma Programme? We will hold a DP information session for our Grade 10 students and their families. A presentation with a brief introduction of the Diploma Programme and an explanation of the DP1 course selection process will be offered. Faculty will be present to answer specific questions about subject area and course information. | Academic Deans: MYP Grading If I have all 8s, why did I end up with a 7? This is a common question we get after reports come out. Rubric bands for each criteria are on a scale of 1-8, however IB's final overall scores are on a scale of 1-7 due to alignment with other programs and GPA. If you have not attended an MYP Assessment presentation, or just need a refresher, please explore this presentation. It answers commonly asked questions such as, "If my child has all 8s for each criteria, why is the final score a 7?" or "What do Criteria A, B, C, and D actually mean in each subject?" or "If grades aren't averaged, how do teachers determine a final grade?" If you have any questions about your child's report, please discuss with your child's teacher or email Rachel Dominic. |
College Counselor Scott Liedtke THE ROLE OF ATHLETICS IN THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS If you have the desire and the talent to compete in varsity athletics at the collegiate level, or if a college coach in any of the three NCAA Divisions (or NAIA) contacts you, your athletic ability may play an important role in your college admissions process. Today, a large percentage of students in college participate in varsity sports, however, only a small percentage of the overall applicant pool are recruited student-athletes. In essence, having the support of the coach or being offered a scholarship to play a sport can be one of the biggest advantages to any applicant in gaining admission to even the most selective colleges. In all cases, the stronger your transcript, the easier it will be for coaches to support you as an athletic admit. To read more click here |
Student Survey Aloha Grade 9-12 Parents, My name is Mitchell Hashimoto, one of your Student Impact Specialists at Le Jardin Academy and a former student who graduated in the class of 2016. Currently, I am a graduate student at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UH), in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management. A requirement for my degree is to complete a capstone project on student environmental mindset and parent/guardian interactions, which I have chosen to have the study sample from LJA.
The purpose of my capstone project is to evaluate the impact of experiential education opportunities and their relationships to an environmentally-friendly mindset. This questionnaire will ask questions about your experiences, such as Impact electives and the Wild Communities Foundation, along with your personal agreement to questions pertaining to the environment. My goal is to obtain data from the whole high school population to ensure the most accurate results in my project. I truly appreciate your time and willingness to participate.
This is the second round of data collection. For those who have already completed consent forms, thank you for your assistance and no further action is required.
If this is your first time, I please ask that you complete the attached form consenting to your student's participation in the study.
The form can be sent to mitchell.hashimoto@lejardinacademy.org or returned with your student to their advisor. If you have any questions you can contact me at msh34@hawaii.edu or mitchell.hashimoto@lejardinacademy.org All the best, Mitchell Hashimoto
